As I build my supply of both english and aromatic tobacco, I wonder...... what effects (if any) will the casings have on the aromatic tobaccos? If it's a completely natural compound- like honey or natural vanilla extract.... I think it would be fine. But what about artificial casings? Say 10 years down the line? Does anyone have any 10+ year old aromatics (that they are very familiar with) to compare with the same but newer tobacco?

I have some Sutliff, then Altadis, Chocolate Truffle jarred in '09 that smells and tastes the same as fresh. I also have a pound bag of C&D Chocolate Cavendish from 2017 that has never been jarred, just resealed that has remained the same.

I bought some 40 year old Erinmore Flake and it was disgusting. I gave a couple of samples to a couple of friends on here and they agreed. Another forum member had some of a similar age and they said it was a big disappointment.
Maybe it was the topping/casing they used back then, which is different from today's Erinmore.
Anyway I learnt a lesson and would never buy an aro over 15-20 years now. That's not to say all aros are gonna suffer the same problem of course.

In my experience, aromatic blend flavorings either mellow or fade with time, and in these instances, to me, that has been a good thing. I want to taste the tobacco more than the flavorings, so some fading is a good thing. As mentioned in an earlier post here, burley keeps well, if that is the base tobacco.

I'd think the natural casings and toppings would fade..
the artificial like in Sutliff described above would stay the same.

Yep, I just opened a can of 5 year old Maple Street and I couldn't detect any maple flavor or aroma. I was pretty disappointed.

So maple street is more natural and dry as opposed to Molto Dolce which is doused in sweet olive-oil or some other type of antifreeze-kerosene mix?
