So, I have to fly out of town for a few days and want to bring a pipe, on the off chance that I get 30-45 minutes to myself for a smoke. What is your preferred lighter to bring in a carry on bag, without getting hassled by US TSA. I don't want to take a chance on havin my Corona Old Boy confiscated...
Thanks!

I thought these devices were prohibited on flights. It seems that Bic lighters and Zippo lighters are allowed, but Zippo lighters must be kept dry. I have a deaf-mute trumpet player friend who tried to sing a Mexican ranchera song on the plane, but a flight attendant gave him a chocolate-filled muffin, and he could only whistle during the flight.

I fly monthly/weekly. The only lighters you can’t take on a plane nowadays is a torch. I fly with my zippo pipe lighter everywhere I go in my pocket and it’s never had to be dry. They occasionally act like it’s a “torch” I politely correct them and ask if they can check with their supervisor, they always come back and tell me that it’s ok.

Any soft flame petrol or butane lighter is ok on a plane.

Put me in the buy a little black Bic disposable camp when I get there category. I don't have any Zippos I want to take a chance on losing even if the chance is just a 1% chance I get someone who doesn't want to follow the regs or doesn't want to have a conversation. However ...... just because my wife took a chance on a Cuban cigar for her dad when we were at JJ Fox earlier in the spring, so what the heck I did as well, we brought a few Cubans back along with some non-Cubans from Davidoff and I was fully prepared to declare, whatever, and see what happened and accept any possible surrender. Well, our flight was substantially delayed leaving London and when it got to Ireland and we had to change planes the window was extremely short to go through customs (you do it in Dublin) and connect and everything - it was a mess for almost everyone who had connections to make and the customs person was obviously aware and interested in only verifying the passports quickly, only asking my wife a vague question that she probably marked "no" without really getting an answer and nicely motioning us off and running (almost literally) so no biggie. The baggage inspection folks hadn't even asked about the cigars.

Same as I carry and use all the time, a Bic. I smoke before and after flights outside and often during layovers (at least on the few times I’ve flown since I picked up a pipe).

@RustiePyles CPG makes a valid point, knowing the rules is a very good thing, because TSA employees often try to go with what they think the rules are (or should be).

I flew out to Hawaii a few years ago. I wanted to skip all the airline drama, and was unwilling to be without Old Boy lighters, so I bought the TSA approved Zippo lighter vault thingy so I could throw them in checked luggage.

Hawaiian Airlines pitched a fit. NO lighters in checked luggage, TSA approved container or no. So it got tossed in my carry-on bag. The container also got cracked on the way back, so maybe they do have a point.

Been carrying the lighters on my person ever since. No issues. If it's not a torch, it's good.

Haven't flown in years...can I bring a pipe and some tobacco with a lighter on my carry-on or must they be checked in luggage?
I’ve flown with them in a carry-on with no issues. If you’ve got a lighter you’re attached to, I’d leave it at home but I’ve never had an issue bringing a Bic in my carry-on.
