I recall hearing somewhere that these 100 gram size tins with the metal caps will keep tobacco good indefinitely, even once already opened. In other words, there's no need to jar it up, you can just store in these tins.

Does anyone have any experience with this? It'd be great if it were true.

They are good.
Not as tight as Mason Jars or compareable products.
But really ok for 2-5 years.

The tins where originally designed for paint. So, they must hold in some time.
Take care to close it completely with a bit of pressure.

+1 what Chris said.

I haven't had a problem with the 100g paint can tins keeping the tobacco fresh if I close it properly after opening.
I bought a 100g tin of DTM Christmas last year and smoked about half of it. I popped it open the other day and it was still moist enough that I let it dry for a few minutes before smoking.

The HU 100g tins I've had have been the same.
