My recent visit to Wayne Davis at Jon’s Pipe’s in The District of The University of Missouri at Columbia whetted my appetite for another Jeantet brand pipe, and lookie what I just scored for $21 plus $7 shipping and oppressive and back breaking taxes to the dad blasted gubbermint.

The pipe is stamped France (to comply with nation of origin laws) and 42 BIS (shape number?) and oil hardened (most Algerian briar was, it had to be).

There is no bargain on today’s market to equal old French pipes.

We are living in a golden age of cheap pre Algerian War of Independence Algerian briar pipes.

Shipping and taxes are a major factor in a $21 pipe.

Wonderful find. I haven't thought of collecting my home country's pipes. Might have to look up some French brands.
What if that pipe I just bought for $21 had been stamped Made in London and King George IV 1895-1953 Funeral Edition Dunhill?

Or it read Bertram’s Eisenhower Inaugural 01/20/1953

It would have been made of the exact same oil cured Algerian briar.

It would cost some multiple of $21.:)

It would not be any better pipe, to smoke.

No but it's french so that makes it automatically better. 😉

This pipe, is as high quality as any machine fraised factory pipe ever was.

Why they are cheap, is a much larger and more contemporary styled Chinese pipe costs $43 brand new today.

I've a 1/4 bent Rhodesian 'Flamilux Jeantet' 511 Oil Hardened pipe bearing the same Reserve du Juble dates of 1810 - 1951. An estate purchase from Denmark some years ago it had then been barely smoked, condition almost as new the cost €35 + postage.

No indication of where the briar is from or that the pipe was made in France although I believe it's safe to assume so. The pipe is a substantial piece of fine workmanship which in common with other French made pipes that I own is a joy to smoke.
