And, a fellow smoker (regardless of political affiliation) contracting a smoking related disease should, in my opinion, be fair game for discussion on a smoking related blog.

The other thread didn't disappear because of discussion about diseases. It never got there because right from the start, that thread was derailed by politics. It had no value to the site, so it went bye-bye.

As long as this one doesn't go that way it will remain open. As soon as political posts start.....closed.

And as an aside, I'd like to know if this subject (a subject pertaining to smoking in general) is taboo? And how and why do threads just DISAPPEAR?

Smoking related disease discussions are not taboo, but some types of other discussions are. If there is a thread started that is of a nature that is against the rules, it is gone.

If there is a thread that has no value to the site, it will probably be gone. This is a pipe and pipe tobacco forum, plain and simple.

Don't just assume you may know why a thread no longer exists. If a thread is gone, it is done for a reason. And not all reasons need to be explained.

It's pretty simple, follow the rules and threads will remain open and not "disappear".

I doubt pipe smoking is an appreciable lung cancer risk if you dont inhale.
But you know what? Nobody gets out of this world alive and you just have to pick your poison and take the ride.
Somethings gonna kill you, because the nature of life is that, if you live long enough, everything you love gets taken from you and the last thing to go is your breath.

So, someone who smoked cigarettes for decades got lung cancer?

If that was going to have any affect on my pipe or cigar smoking, I never would have started in the first place.

This is a story only because it's someone famous.

Long-time heavy cigarette smoking: high risk.

Long-time light to moderate pipe or cigar smoking: low risk.

My mum died of breast cancer when I was 12 (back in the early 70's treatments were not that advanced) and although my dad was a lifelong smoker I doubt that contributed to her demise (she was not a smoker).

As I said above my dad was a life long smoker; he died in his 80's from just about every known cancer except lung cancer. Even his doctor conceded that being an observer at the Bikini Atoll and Woomera atomic tests plus 10 years or so working (as an engineer) on Britain's V-Bomber and Blue Streak missile programs with nuclear weapons whilst surrounded by aviation fuel, rocket fuel and the various (now known to be highly carcinogenic fire retardants used in the circumstances) was probably a more likely cause of his health issues.

Not saying smoking is a 100% safe pastime but then nor is crossing the road so it's pretty much up to individuals to evaluate the risks and decide what they should do. Personally I have no plans to stop smoking pipes - 2 or 3 times a day - anytime soon.

I've actually decided to smoke more. I've been ill since last December with no clue as to what it is and no signs of it abating: no, it's not lung/respiratory system related. If I've cancer already, it's lower than that. I want to smoke as much as I can from my 'cellar' before I take the dirt nap.

I have worse things to worry about than lung cancer.

Explain lung cancer in non smokers.
because that's how cancer works. Even if you smoke cigarettes you have to be somewhat prone to lung cancer to get it. Additionally to the fact that how susceptible people are to getting cancer, any damage to cells is going to be somewhat carcinogenic bad air quality getting other respiratory illness. Cancer is when a cell doesn't copy right. It's a lot like magnetic tape. Genetics determine the quality of the tape, however even if it's a really great quality magnetic tape if you keep copying new albums over it there will be distortions and other lowfi effects. Cells work in the same way basically. Also the clear fact remains that the percentage of smokers that get not just lung cancer but specific types of lung cancer is so much higher then the percentage of non smokers who get lung cancer and certain types of lung cancer. You know like how skinny active young people can have heart attacks too, it's just more surprising when it happens.

Very wise and poignant.

I would hope that we're all aware that smoking is not a healthy habit. Anyone smoking indoors is inhaling. Pipe smoking is not particularly safe. Some of us will get cancer. Some of us will suffer from COPD, emphysema or other respiratory conditions. Some of us won't contract any of these diseases or suffer any obvious health effects. There's always a genetic wildcard.
Live in a city? Drive a car? Eat fried food? Lot's of decisions can affect your health, expose you to carcinogens. We all make self destructive decisions all through our lives. It's just that we're also great at denial and rationalization all the way to the grave.

I'm going to smoke a bowl of Rhythm & Blues.

Unless we are in Woody Allen's "Sleeper" from 1973:
...two doctors discussing a 20th Century health food store owner (as played by Woody Allen himself) after he wakes up from being asleep for two centuries:

Dr. Melik: This morning for breakfast he requested something called “wheat germ, organic honey and tiger’s milk.”

Dr. Aragon: [chuckling] Oh, yes. Those are the charmed substances that some years ago were thought to contain life-preserving properties.

Dr. Melik: You mean there was no deep fat? No steak or cream pies or… hot fudge?

Dr. Aragon: Those were thought to be unhealthy… precisely the opposite of what we now know to be true.

Dr. Melik: Incredible.

I'm in the camp which believe that everyone carries cancer around in their body. How it manifests depends on life style as well as one's immune system and genes. If your lifestyle includes acts which overwhelm your system ...cancer, heart disease, diabetes or whatever may arise. It's actually all pretty simple. Are you going to try to raise or lower the life expectancy projections? I do admire the members who are simply striving to be average,

And my reply to this subject is the same as it is in all of the threads pertaining to this subject, and is this:

Any type of smoking has risks. If you (a person, any you) are that concerned about the risks of smoking and it worries you, then you probably shouldn't smoke.

Me on the other hand, I know that I am going to die one day. What kills me or when it happens doesn't matter. When I'm gone I won't be worried about it, just like I'm not worried about it now.

Cancer is mainly caused by mutation of cells from repeated exposure to something, and also chronic inflammation.

As a pipe smoker I worry much more about oral cancer than lung cancer. With Mr. Limbaugh having smoked and inhaled cigarettes for many years I don't really see a fair comparison. I do worry about pipe smoking's risk, and as such shoot to smoke as little as possible, but Mr. Limbaugh's case doesn't weigh in on that worry any more than someone who died skydiving.

Only in the fact that it is smoking related. Like you, I have a major concern with oral cancer and have good reason to be. My lymphatic system (in my neck specifically) has been compromised for many years. I've been bemoaning the thought of giving up the one dark pleasure (from a merely societal perspective) that I have. I've been railing against this decision for a month now, but it's obvious to me that my pipe smoking must go.

I tend to see providence best in the pattern of life and for me, a most improbable pattern has arisen around this subject. People might say that this thought of mine can be likened to Pareidolia or brush it off as a somatoform disorder - and they may be right - but I've been around long enough to understand how this cycle works, and not to tempt it for longer than is prudent for accurate validation. And so it goes...

But there is an upside. I don't have to sell my collection of pipes nor do I have to stop enjoying the culture, just the product itself. I'm not defined by my pipe (as men were in the past) so there's no loss there either.

THIS was my ire when I saw the original post about Rush Limbaugh taken down: to not hear people's thoughts and concerns on the subject (his condition, not the man). He is a political lightening rod for sure, but these kind of people make for the best and most heated debate.

Thanks for chiming in.

OK, so, if a celebrity made a public statement about being diagnosed with terminal colon cancer, would that make you quit hamburgers, BBQs, junk food, and any other edibles that have been 'linked' by 'conclusive' studies to the development of colon cancer?
I don't eat any of this stuff now. I'm a 55 year old body builder, longboarder, ultra lightweight backpacker and business owner. I plan to live a long and very productive life. But this won't happen if my one dark pleasure causes me issues.

I know somethings going to get me, I just don't want it to be someting that I can control.

Whew!...I'm feeling light headed...and there's a funny feeling in my chest....can somebody....please call....a.....doct.................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... nana

Did you give any thought to asking the site's owner or a mod?
Of course I did, that's why I tested the water.

Sometimes it's better to ask a question without actually asking. You get a more honest response that way. This post is still up so my question has been answered.
