Is There a Thing as Too Many Pipes?

I don't think there is such a thing as too many. Part of the fun of pipe smoking is collecting pipes.
I think at last count I'm up to 58 pipes. I have tried to curb my PAD, alas it hasn't been easy.. I still plan on buying a birth year Dunhill, and possibly a new one as well. Just gotta get a large rack soon or wifey will probably start on the warpath as I am running out of space for the 6 and 12 pipe estate racks I've purchased.. So I would say "NO" along with everyone else....
I am up to 127. Am selling the ones I don't smoke to make room for a few more. Is that too many? No, just about enough.
The answer for me is yes, I can have too many pipes. I am currently at 44 and will be getting rid of some. I personally hate looking at a pipe that does not get smoked, it is not fulfilling it's purpose and I believe I am doing said pipe a disservice. I have thinned the herd a number of times to move out pipes I no longer reach for to make room for ones that I will. I also dislike having a pipe in the collection that I feel I have to smoke because it is there. Why tie up money that could be used for a pipe I will smoke or tobacco that I want to add to the cellar I say.
I'm with Harris - Yes. I don't enjoy having pipes that don't get smoked. I'm at 34 right now and will try to keep my collection in the low 30's range. (which is also almost at my rack max too)
Boy am I looking forward to Harris' sale. From what I have seen all of his pipes are beauty's. Doc Watson I too suffer from the PAD addiction ( oh yeah you know firsthand) although I am thinning some of the reasonable pipes I bought when I started this journey. I am currently at 50 which during the winter months allows each a long rest. But with warm weather coming they will get smoked more.
Al is a heretic too. Both he and Cigrmaster should be burned at the stake in a fire stoked by a combination of copious quantities of Lane aromatics and Mixture 79. Once they get a whiff of the malodorous scent, they will be praying for the sweet relief that only death can bring.
Good point, 3/4's the way thru winter here, my weekly rotation is only seven or so pipes. During the rest of the year, that probably doubles. Check with me in mid-July and I might have a different answer! So, don't light the stake just quite yet...

I'm with Harris and Al on this topic. I have nearly a hundred pipes, some of which I have never smoked for various reasons. I'm going to pare the herd to about fifty as I think that's as many as I can justify to myself. My gal doesn't care if I have a thousand pipes so its not a pressure thing. I just find that I tend to reach for the same pipes with the same tobaccos and I'm trying to narrow those as well so I can stockpile the ones I really enjoy the most. I haven't tried too many Lane aromatics or Mixture 79 either so when you burn me with Harris and Al, we can compare tasting notes.
