One of the coolest pipe smoking fiddle players I ever had the pleasure to chill with, Vassar Clements, kept a pipe in his maw, lit or not, pretty much 24/7.
If you've got jaws of steel, go for it. I tried it for a bit, and it kinda started to hurt after awhile.

And the coolest! That guy could party and talk some serious shit! Loved the company of blues players and hippie/folkies every bit as much(probably more) than the bluegrass purists. My pops shared the stage with him several times circa '98-'01 and I was lucky enough to get to hang out in various backstage greenrooms with him and many other great musicians.
I clench my pipe with a dip in I figure to much nicotine would make me sick so I dip at work but still want to clench
I tried smoking my pipe with dip in just one time and the results were not pretty. I've never tried clenching an unlit pipe with dip in my lip. I just may try that.

A pipe finally got me off my 35+ year cigarette addiction.
Although I rarely clench a pipe, I often find myself just holding an unlit pipe that keeps my hands occupied when feeling fidgety.
There's no such thing as 'right' or 'wrong' when it comes to pipes AFAIC.
Many pipe smokers 'sip' a pipe and can make a bowl last for over an hour.
Me, well I'm an inhaler who often has a few puffs before becoming distracted allowing the bowl to extinguish.
I'm sure that many would think that I'm 'doing it wrong!' lol.
I very much see my pipes like an adult pacifier.
Pipes got me off the dreaded ciggies and they bring me much enjoyment.
That's all that really matters.
I don't smoke inside my place. But I also clench my pipe sometimes and pretend smoke it. Often when taking nasal snuff. It kind of proves to me the pipe isn't just a nicotine delivery system but a bit more. It's only bad if you trip and swallow your pipe, that would be bad or worse you trip and break the mortise.
