Thanks for the welcome, I am a new pipe smoker and have been lurking for ages but couldn't resist posting this. The second Pathe is another wonder and mention of a pipe shortage I assume was caused by Herr Hitler - in 1945 I suspect quite a few needed a pipe or two steady their nerves......

That trip through the Charatan pipe assembly line is heart-breaking to anyone who has ever faced a hobby block with a pocket knife in hand. Zip-zip, everything speeds along, from block to fully shaped pipe in a few minutes. It looks like the pipe shortage was well in hand.

I Believe that is Trevor Barton and his collection was auctioned about a year ago.

After WWII, and for decades, U.S. pipe makers all stamped their pipes "Imported Briar" to emphasize that they were made of briar and not the various other substitutes (Mountain Laurel, maple, etc.) that were used during the war due to the scarcity of briar.

That first pipe is very amusing. It's an interesting/odd collection; didn't see any pipes there that I'd be interested in personally.
