Hi, I'm new here. Here is my formal introduction.
I am from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. My city, provincial and federal administrations are now conversatives. Massive public budget cuts have already happened from the current government and more is to come (health care, education, emergency personnel and other common public services). We only had slight tax break and that's aimed at the wealthy. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think some people are profiting from the massive surplus..
Provincial tobacco taxes is still the same. Also, Ontario earns 3x the amount of money than the amount spent treating tobacco related illnesses? Knowing only the government can operate casinos in this country is the casing on this bad blend. It's a bad time to be middle class or poor here. I don't vote because it's hard to trust any politician.
The only thing that could make me happy right now is ordering wholesale shipments of tobacco without "issues". I'm proposing to order Samuel Gawith Full Virginia Flake from UK either direct or from distributor. Anyone have experience importing?

Hey im from toronto aswell. Im looking into the same thing as your question. But it is looking to me that buying from an online store from the states will roughly cost the same amount from here. Because of the taxes you pay to have it shipped over the border. Talking with a guy from a B&M seeing if they order it in the cost and again basicly the same.
If there is a cheaper legal way to do this (as in not getting around the taxes) i hope we can figure it out.

This hasn't come up, so this is a preemptive note.
Pipes Magazine does not condone tax avoidance.
If you are considering this, you are on your own, and it should not be discussed in a public forum.

There are many ways, of course they're illegal.. A legal safe method keeping is orders under 200g, by using USPS, you won't be duty/border taxed on any product.

I'm thinking of wholesale shipments, over 3000g of tobacco. But for personal use.

This is no longer applicable unless you cross the border; you can be taxed on any amount of tobacco that arrives through the mail. That said, the tax (in B.C.) on a 2oz tin with a value of $12 is $18; bringing the total cost to $30 CAD. The same tin can be had from a local brick and mortar tobacconist for a whopping $44.99 (plus 14% GST/PST on top of that); making the international etailer the cheaper option.

Do not attempt this! If you don't have the proper licensure, any amounts of tobacco over 1000g (1kg) are deemed illegal for import and will be seized if discovered. While luxury tobacco users can and do buy massive amounts of tobacco to age and hedge against rising prices / availability issues; the government does not accept this as reason to suspend the import laws.

Just a question but why would our goverment care about the amount of tobacco we bring into the county if it is being taxed? I am just curious never really looked into this.

Am I following this correctly, a 2oz tin of pipe tobacco runs 45 dollars in a Canadian store?

If that is true I really feel for all you pipe smokers up north.

some do and some dont. 2 oz captain black jack is 18 dollar at a store. some with the black cherry i buy. There are some that are more but i havnt really seen anything cheeper. so our low prices are around 18 dollars i believe. If we were to buy a 4 oz tin off the net for (lets just say) 10 bucks we would need to bay 25-30 for it after taxes. and coming over the border. Which is the reason why i had a post earlier asking were other canadians got there tobacco.

I'm in Nova Scotia and I pay around $25 - $40.00 per 50 gram tin at a B&M. I order from etailers all the time and it seems, new laws or not, that if I order 200 grams or under, they leave me alone. As soon as I sneak an extra few grams over 200, the pop me and charge me tax and customs.

Yes, my experience is the same as ohin3's -- under 8 oz comes through without charges, anything over I have to pay duty. But even then it's cheaper than buying it locally. I'd like to support my local B&M (both of them!) but on a retired income, there's just no way.
