Real working dogs -- bloodhounds, border collies, and the like -- have to be given jobs or their job will be mischief. Dachshunds will still track other animals into burrows, and their minds are exceedingly sharp, in my experience, though I haven't owned one. They seem a good compromise for people who don't have spacious property but want a notably intelligent dog with a work ethic. But they will run the house, if permitted, or sometimes if not permitted.
