What would be your dream pipe and from which maker? For me it is easy, Jess Chonowitsch is the guy who I would love to own one of his pipes as his shaping and the quality of the grain he gets, knocks my socks off. Here is an example of my dream pipe, it is Dublin which is my favorite shape and the grain on it is mind blowing. This pipe probably sold for at least 5 grand but to my eye, it is the perfect pipe. One day when all my kids are out of college, I would seriously consider spending that amount as a gift to myself even though I think it is an obscene amount of money for a pipe. When it came down to pullling the trigger, I would probably balk at spending 5 grand, but it is nice to dream.

Money is not an issue but, I've only seen, in the past few years, but, one pipe I really wanted to possess. Sadly it was, I've told the story here, already spoken for. It was only the second "artisan" pipe I've seen that really tickled my fancy.

If money was not an issue I would find and purchase the square-panel, square-shanked billiard (pictured below) that Mr. Crosby smoked as he sang "White Christmas" with Marjorie Reynolds in the film "Holiday Inn." As for the maker, I do not know - Dunhill perhaps?

Hunter: You have a similar idea to me. If money was no issue I would want a pipe that was owned and smoked by JRR Tolkien.

I'm with Cigar Master. I've lusted over JC's creations for some time and perhaps one day? Who knows but for the time being I'm very happy and feel blessed with what I have.

I'd probably get in touch with a dozen of the high-level carvers with ideas, and see who was most simpatico to collaborate on pipe concepts, really take it back to briar sources and other materials, some maybe exotic. I'd end up with a pipe I understood and had had some input in creating. And I'd learn a lot along the way. It would be part a commission and part a pipe course for me. I'm a reasonably good visual thinker, so I might not be altogether a burden to a pipe carver. My fantasy is safe from being tested by the "if money was not an issue" clause.

If I had unlimited funds, I would build my own woodworking shop with all the latest and greatest equipment and make my own pipes.

Thanks Hunter, I know that pic from the biography I own. I would need to find it and lets face it... money is an issue!

A seven day set of pipes by Sixten Ivarsson. Ivarsson opened the door through which so many others stepped. Next would be a cased Barling companion set from 1915, my father's birth year. Last, but certainly not least, would be a seven day set by Lee Von Erck.

If money was no object I would pick any of a number of artisan pipe makers and pay him/her $10,000 to give me 2-3 days of watching him/her make a pipe to my specs with all of the lavishing attention that he/she can put into it. THAT would be worth the money... if I had it to spend...

An Ivarsson family tree: one from Sixten, one from Lars, and one from Nanna.

I'd fly to Turkey and find the best portrait carver to create a set of meerschaums in the images of Frank Zappa and the original Mothers of Invention.
