Mates,
I have been smoking off and on for a few years now. I've settled in on Virginias and Va Pers or Va Burs and variations thereof. I dabbled in the frog Morton and 965 world to see if Latakia was for me and decided it wasn't. On a whim I picked up a tin of Gaslight and figured I wouldn't like it due to the Latakia. Well, I'm complete blown away by it. I'm very interested to know if my tastes or changing or I've just stumbled across a "class" or style of Latakia blends that I love. The Latakia and Virginias really shine in this blend.
It's truly amazing. Now that I'm on the Gaslight wagon, what else compares that I can explore? Or maybe I'll just smoke this for the rest of my life. It's that good!!!!! Would love your veteran advice. Thanks all.

I'm just like you, just tried some Gaslight, and it's perhaps the best English blend I've had so far; even though I've smoked many latakia blends. Try some other ones by GLP like Westminster.

That sounds just like me. Loves gaslight, 965 is "meh".
These I have tried, and love (along with Gaslight).

These I have not tried, but I'm pretty sure they fall into a similar category.

And I liked Black House so I'm pretty sure I'd like Balkan Blue too.

I'm in the same situation as mentioned above. I have been having a hard time with some medium type Latakia blends like 965 and was starting to think maybe I could not tolerate Latakia but I had not given up.
But then I tried "Captain Earles-Stimulus Package" and I was blown away. What an amazing blend. I'm a convert.
I have not tried Gaslight or Quiet Nights, but I have tins in my cellar.

What is it you fellas like about Gaslight, specifically? I realize since its inception it has developed quite a following, but I still...no matter how I pack it, no matter which pipe I use to smoke it...don't care at all for it. I know everyone's tastes differ and all, but this is the only blend I can think of where I hold the minority view of disliking it.
I smoked a bowl of it last night from a tin with 1yr 9mo age on it and walked away unimpressed. At times the smoke was harsh and reminiscent of a cigar, which is not what I normally like in my latakia blends. YMMV.
I have a second unopened tin with the same amount of age if anyone wants to trade for it.

Do you like any of the similar blends mentioned? Sometimes, too much Latakia is too much, or certain types of mixture hit the tongue wrong.
I can think of a few favorites I have found unimpressive. Part of it is what one looks for in a flavor profile. The rest may be biology. I imagine that -- as weird as this sounds -- air temperature, humidity and background smells (like pines) can be influential also.
I prefer to smoke dark fired near pine trees. (Now call the men in white lab coats to sedate me.)

Gaslight reminds me of hanging out by the rail yards or taking the train places when I was a kid. I find its smokeyness has an old industrial quality that I like.
Can't think of much else quite like it, but C&D Pirate Kake with a cup of coffee was similar.

frozen's got the idea; look around for lat forward blends, and see what else they have in them, and buy and try in small quantities. Your chances improve with blenders you know are good.

Latakia blends make up about 1/2 of my current rotation and I've got probably 40-50 blends in my cellar. Of the blends mentioned I love Blackhouse and Blue Mountain. I have 8oz of Pirate Kake jarred up that I haven't tried yet. Two of my pipes are dedicated exclusively to this genre as well.
Still trying to figure out why this one doesn't agree with me. Turkish perhaps? No idea.

Margate, Pirate Kake, Star of the East, Vintage Syrian, and Balkan Supreme are excellent blends to explore!

Lovely advice mates. Beezer, even though to my uneducated Latakia palate it feels "lat forward" the Virginias are very present and delicious. I find anyway. And it has a great spice to it as well.
