Happens in that order every year, first Thanksgiving, for we Americans, and then Christmas. Don't know how old you are but, you'll have to get used to it. Or, you could move to most any other country on the planet if it's that much of a strain.rotf

Funny, I grew up in a Southern fundamentalist denomination that forbade the celebration of Christmas, but my family secretly celebrated Santa Clause for us kids. But, it was always on the downlow, keeping it quiet. We didn't want fellow church members to find out. You'd maybe see a wreath or a plastic Santa in someone's yard... something secular to show some Holiday or seasonal flair. But, now it's like "who can put the largest manger in their yard?" "Who can outdo the Jone's?" It's like we WANT it to be more commercial!

I agree. I prefer Thanksgiving also. But, there is something magical about pulling those boxes of ancient ornaments out of the attic, and sacrificing a tree to bring inside the house. Everyone setting around and hoping for more kindness and generosity in the world.

The intent, the warm ceremonial gathering and closeness with friends a family, gets buried in our attempts to set the atmosphere for it. A good expansive shared meal and some decorations are beneficial. Over-gifting, whole weeks spent setting up and taking down elaborate light set-ups and exhibits, unending shopping excursions and such probably bury any good emotions that might want to surface, and leave us empty and angry at the end of it all. Holidays should be human events, small scale and personal.

I've never understood those who get all immersed into the commercialism. I suppose it's the competitive spirit or, simply being unable to resist the expectations of the kids and neighbors. Instead of lowering such expectations. many of use strive to fulfill them. Recognizing that, at it's best, it is a Christian remembrance, is to swim against the stream and many are not willing to do so.

Business wants an all encompassing "holiday" not a Christian observation. Christmas is also a "trigger" for many.

Christmas is way too full of angst for many. How sad.

It was the month of August when all the Christmas junk was put out on the shelves of (what was then) our local Woolworth's store. Turned out to be the last year it was in business altogether.

I have to admit that I started pushing my jewelry out on social media for a week now also. I already have started buying, so I know that if I don't catch people at the beginning of their shopping, they usually can't afford me. Actually, even in the Spring art shows, I will mention my work as gifts. That way I can catch the guys buying for girlfriends, who may break up with them before Christmas, ha ha.
