I have a 1930s D&B pipe tool with a case made of nickel. I am sure many of you are more than familiar. Can I polish the nickel with something like Simichrome? Or do you have a better recommendation?

Nickel won't hold a polish. I mean, you can get it shiny, but it dissipates overnight. And, you can clean off the oxidation, but it too will just reappear overnight. Think, when was the last time you've ever seen a shiny nickel coin?
It's just a nasty metal. But, it takes heat well, and doesn't deteriorate. It will last in that state for 100's of years.

I have the same knife but not in very good shape. The tamper falls out and the blades look to have a little rust. It's a family heirloom with initials engraved in it. I wish I could figure out how to clean it up but keep it intact. I want to give it to my son someday.
