How hot does your bowl get, burning Aros? I just wanted to know if I am running too hot for a fairly new pipe. Also how much cake should there be in a broken in pipe. Thanks in advance!!

If it gets so hot that you can't hold it to your cheek, let alone your hands, then it's too hot and you should let it cool down a bit. Let it go out if you have to, you can always relight and you don't want the bowl to burn out...

If you can hold it and count to 5 it's 150 or below count to three and have to pull away too hot, near the btm of bowl be careful because most of the time you will have hotter spots , over 150 put it down and let it cool especially a new pipe with no cake. Sometimes you can use small spoon and where spot is hot gently move tobbaco at that spot towards center of bowl, hope that helps, new pipe you should be smokeing an old codger blend to break it in, burley s burn Cooler if you don"t puff like a freight train, hope this helps. Welcome aboard SpecialK.
I have been smoking mainly Aromatics for many years, and I suppose my experience has virtually eliminated that particular issue.

It has been my experience that most of the time excessive heat stems from packing too tightly, puffing to rapidly, and repeated lighting of the tobacco. The first two are relatively easy to overcome, but the latter (repeated lighting) is more difficult to overcome.

In my opinion (and there are many different views on this particular aspect of pipe smoking) frequent tamping can help maintain a smaller and therefore cooler ember. You must be conscious of the pressure used when tamping, puffing technique while tamping, and twisting the tamper to sand down the ash. There have been a number of threads addressing this particular technique.

Over time you will develop your own "style" and rituals resulting in longer more flavorful and cooler smokes.

Ok that is good info, I thought I was ok but wanted to be sure, I really like the Aros right now, and my pipe is warm to touch but not hot. The cake ratio is something I am a bit confused on right now. I don't know how much is just right and how much is too much yet.

Just right is just the amount of cake you are comfortable with; there is no universal right or wrong here.

I have seen people smoke pipes where you could only fit a pencil in there. And I have seen pipes with no cake whatsoever.
