Meh, doctors...
They're essentially useless.
You're hard pressed to find someone who really cares, and even if you do, they can do only so much. You're lucky if you have a friend who is a doctor and then can help you out. If you don't, I wouldn't bother. Maybe it's different in your country, but in Canada, with socialised medicare, what doctors want is to get rid of you in 10 minutes so that they can treat the next case. Pointless.
There used to be a local politician in my city who was dealing with depression. He went to the "experts". He was referred to a psychiatrist who put him on anti-depressants. Man then became addicted to meds; he had to be sent to a detox clinic/treatment. Since his depression was still present, now he had two major problems. He ended up committing suicide. So much for "professional help".
Alas, there is a societal attitude in North America and the West that purports people are basically incapable of coping with anything without "professional help". If you watch a cyclist be hit by a car, then you need counseling. Your boss yelled at you, you need counseling (and to file a harassment at work suit). Your girlfriend dumped you, you need to see the doctor for depression and also to talk to a counselor. You're constipated, you need a counselor.
And of course, there's a professional counseling machine that makes money out of telling people they're hapless saps, who are not resilient enough to deal with problems themselves or with the help of family. People like Warren would be seen as anomalies, reckless people who only endanger themselves and others by 'playing tough' and refusing to seek professional help. Balooney.
As if that were not bad enough, there's also a societal tendency to blow things out of proportion. As Warren and others here have mentioned, some of us go through periods of feeling down, yea depressed. But if you mention that to people, especially employers or government a whole stink is made. I remember when I was applying for the Navy and during the medical told the examiner that I sometimes got depressed (i.e. had bad spells of feeling down). Well, I learned right then and there to keep my mouth shut. The guy immediately required a letter from my family doctor assessing the extent of the depression and assuring that it wouldn't make me incapable of taking the basic military training. My physician had to send them a letter stating 'NO, this guy does NOT have clinical depression'. Depression has become a spook word, like discriminate, among others.
The only professional, medical help I'd seek is that of my homoeopath. At least he listens to me for as long as it takes, and the remedies he prescribes actually help and don't make me addicted. But even he told me that some issues of emotional nature are NOT going to be cured by medicine: they need to be resolved in a different manner. If it's a relationship issue, the remedies can help with coping, but until the issues are resolved the depression won't go away. I hear homoeopathy is bigger in India than it is here (heck, that's where my repertories and guides were printed), so you might want to look into that.
You ask how we mean lean depressive machines cope? I drink. I'm not ashamed to say it. I put limits, though. I don't get drunk. I don't drink in the morning: that's very dangerous and indicative of a problem with substance abuse. I have a daily nightcap. Like the remedies, it helps me a bit, but I continue to be down because what makes my life a living hell is beyond my control, and the one who can help doesn't care.
Whatever your problems are, they need a personal approach and a personal (not necessarily you) touch.
Whatever your problems are, man, don't you ever kill yourself. Not only doesn't it solve anything, but it only nets you a greater and everlasting pain.
God bless.
