In my opinion you over rubbed it out. I say cut it into cubes or strips. But that's how I enjoy it.

I always rub out. Usually to about half way between your first and second pics, and dry for about an hour depending on blend. I’ve tried every method, you can make em all work, that way just seems to burn most consistently.

Having a bowl of HH Burley Flake right now and went with the fold/stuff method.

I think I’m gonna be a rub it out kinda guy. Obviously a bowl each way isn’t really enough to formulate an opinion, just yet. However, I really appreciate the intricacies of smoking a pipe and the set up is enjoyable to me, as well.

I felt like I had to look over my shoulder to avoid getting a solicitation charge when I was folding and stuffing whereas rubbing it out and getting it ready for the bowl felt more like a nice evening leading up to the main event.
