Thats a czech tool built in? Love the pipe!
Thankee.

I make those from leather for the local B&M. It's a strip of ~3mm English bridle (though any leather with a firm temper would do) 8" long with holes for a Chicago screw on both ends ~1/2" from the edge. I use 12 mm Chicago screws to accomodate the Czech tool which is provided by the B&M itself.

Alternatively, you can just rivet the band into a loop but then you won't be able to insert the Czech tool:

I make both kinds but the ones with the option to insert the tool just proved more popular.

Leather has the advantages that it's light, pliable, durable, looks good, and doesn't scratch the pipes.

Two cheap and easy to throw together pipe rests I made for my workshop from a scrap of pallet wood. Nothing fancy, but they do their job. Good weight and wide base so I don’t have to worry about them getting knocked over easily.

Top one is based of a design I saw on Reddit, pallet wood and a bent coat hanger.

Bottom is pallet wood and a scrap of walnut.

Not exactly a rest, but, I took apart some old bar’s peppermint patty dispenser from the 60’s - 70’s a while back, held onto the barrel piece and forgot about it. Then a few months back, found it again, set one of my pipes in it, and the rest is history. Not only do the chambers fit pipes of all sizes, The middle of the piece is empty, so, I can fit filters, pouches of tobacco, small pipes, generally any type of pipe accoutrement within it. There's even a hole drilled in the center of the top piece that can hold a tamper. Goes to show, nearly anything can be turned into piping paraphernalia.

The thing with smoot surfaces is that the pipes will slide on them and eventually tip over. If you want a rest for your desk this might not be too much of an issue, but if you want something for, say, the car, a smooth surface will net you lots of frustration.

Been there myself. Before I got into leather I used a broken off cupholder as a pipe rest in my car. The notch in the cup was 'ideal' for a pipe stem, but the smooth surface made larger pipes go head over heel:
