Good morning you guys. Little storm passing through woke me up so I'm sitting at the kitchen table drinking coffee, watching the lightning. Decided to start an account because I've been lurking for a month or two, soaking up everything I can about pipe smoking. So my smoking background is mainly cigarettes. Started when I was 16 and quit permanently when I was 29, if I remember correctly. I am now 35. Have smoked the occasional cigar here and there, very far and few between. Now I'm going to be honest, and laugh if you must. What peaked my interest in smoking a pipe was the lotr movies. They made it look very calming and enjoyable. I'm sure that is the case for several of you as well (don't lie). Anyways, now that is out of the way, I have a wife and a son that is almost 3 years old, and another due in 2 months, which is apparently a girl, so that will be neat. Hopefully she stays in there until the due date, because of renovations I have started and still working on. So yes, I have been interested in taking up pipes for some time now, just purchased a beautiful Savinelli 921 which I am waiting until I am skilled with a pipe before using. Right now I am smoking a MM cob to get fam with packing, lighting and smoking. So far I have ordered mostly aromatic blends (BCA, three blind moose, blood red moon, luxury twist flake, and some 1Q.) I have only so far tried the three blind moose blend, which I believe to be OK. Hard to judge without something to compare it to. Looking forward to trying the others. I have just placed an order for SG FVF, and orlik golden sliced, and now even scrolling through some English and balkan blends, lol. So with 3 bowls total over the course of a week and a half, it's safe to say that I am in search of my tobacco of choice. Looking forward to it, actually. Due to the family and my own personal beliefs on subjecting non-smokers to 2nd hand smoke, I only smoke outside on the porch when I can have a while to myself. It's definitely a relaxing hobby, even if I can't seem to get the bowl to stay lit for more than 3 minutes at best. Anyways, I look forward to becoming a part of this community, and thank you for having me! Steve G

Hi Steve, Ben was referring to myself. I'm actually in Orleans. Welcome to the site. That storm last night was quite a boomer out our way as well. Glad to see another local lad that pipes on this site. We are as rare as hens teeth. This is a great site and be warned that it is addictive. But having 2 kids won't give you a lot of time to do a lot of surfing.
If your tabac keeps going out, make sure that it is well dried. And yes, we can meet up and have a bowl one day!

What an exciting time, a young'un on the run and another due soon. Welcome aboard. Good information, history, and pipe expertise on Forums. My expertise is mostly moderately priced pipes and avuncular smoking advice. Canadians are major participants here, along with U.S. folks, but also many others from around the world. Nice cosmopolitan group. One of my pitches to new pipe people is buy blends in small quantities; your tastes will develop, so what you love now may change. Save the blends you don't like, in jars, and try them again in a year or so. Try various genres, cuts, and brands.
Welcome from the SF Bay Area. Don't feel weird about starting because LOTR. I've joked before about a venn diagram of pipe smokers and LOTR fans being nearly one damn circle. I have never read the books and only seen pieces of the movies, but I enjoy the idea of mythology and world building of the type Tolkien was able to accomplish. I'll have to jump in at some point. And we all took up pipe smoking after we saw someone else do it, and thought we might like it too, I reckon.
You've definitely got some good blends to start with, and as you get some English/Balkan blends to try, you should have a better idea of what you like.

Welcome from Knik River, Alaska! If you are having trouble keeping it lit watch some of Muttnchop Piper's videos on the subject on youtube. He has many on packing, lighting, smoking, cleaning, and more. He is a character but the info can be very helpful for n00bs, it certainly was for me. Just make sure to set the playback speed to 1.5
It is valuable information but the dude talks slower than an Ent.
Get you some English blends immediately. I would start with Seattle Pipe Club's Plum Pudding and some GL Pease Maltese Falcon. And give that Savinelli a go. Briar is good stuff, just don't get it too hot and you won't fuck it up. Even if you do, you probably won't. Just don't remove the stem at all when it is hot. Some will tell you that doesn't matter, but why risk it.
You might consider getting yourself another briar as well, maybe a shorter and lighter one as you will want to try to clench eventually, especially if you end up using "the breath method" which I would recommend at least researching, again via muttnchop. It changed pipe smoking for me bigtime when I first started out and will help you keep it lit when employed properly. Seems like a pain to pay attention so much to your cadence at first, but before long it becomes second nature. You will want a second briar soon enough anyway, and there are plenty of cheap estate pipes out there. Savinelli is an excellent choice for affordable quality.
