EDIT: Fixed Capitalization in Title (See Rule 9)

I've started getting into collecting and refurbishing old Stanwell pipes, and recently obtained one that has me puzzled. It is a "Regd. No."-era Hand Made 83R pot, which has an early looking, hand-cut stem. But the real poser is the bowl: There was a lot of cake and lava to remove (which I did), only to reveal that the light edge I though was oxidized cake was actually a full lining of the bowl with something other than briar(could it be meerschaum, or clay?). Has anyone ever encountered or heard of an old, meer-lined Stanwell before? I can't find any other examples online, and am curious what exactly it is, and if it was sold this way, or added later. (The liner actually brings the bowl down to a fairly standard 3/4" diameter, so it looks original, rather than a jury-rigged retrofit.)
