Dear friends,

The little notch headed brass screws neatly tightened in the same horizontal position and the lovely ivorine
( celluloid ) looking Alfred Dunhill LTD. inlay .
I liked it so much I could not refrain.
My gut feeling tells me it is from the thirties, but this could be wishful thinking :)
Please share your appreciated opinions, I'd really like to know !

Perhaps someone with the Loring compilation of Dunhill catalogs could skim them to look for your rack? That might help date it. Alternatively when it arrives you might find something on it which provides a clue.

nice to my unprofessional eye it looks right at home in the 1930's but that doesn't mean so much when it's a company that is so proud of tradition and tries to harken back to older times. But I could see that showing up in a movie or television show set in the 30's.

Thank you Jon.
I am familiar with the Loring Dunhill pages, unfortunately not with his compilation of the Dunhill catalogs.
There is a catalog (?) nr. E 16 X engraved on it.
Will go through my " About Smoke " copy tomorrow .

Like in "Gosford Park " my favourite one.
The slow police detective ( Stephen Fry ) smokes a very interesting pipe in this quintessential British whodunnit.
Love it, despite the very poor DVD quality.

Love it, DVD Quality is very poor though.
great movie. Best part is it's made by an American at least the director is. Two of his older movies I love are....
Brewster McCloud (1970) - IMDb - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065492/?ref_=nm_flmg_dr_44 and That Cold Day in the Park (1969) - IMDb - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065086/?ref_=nm_flmg_dr_46 all three are very different movies. Which is the best and worst thing about Robert Altman he likes doing different things and it doesn't always pay off but when it does it really does.

Our mantelpiece also houses a smaller Dunhill one that holds six pipes.
It looks to be from the same period; the smaller rectangular inlay is from similar material.
I am not an expert on wood, but this one looks to be walnut.
The larger one possibly mahogany ?

Hi Orlando,

If you scroll down the Pipedia page dedicated to John Loring (see: John C. Loring - Pipedia - https://pipedia.org/wiki/John_C._Loring) you'll find a section entitled "Catalog Compilations". There you'll find the full story of the four fat volumes Loring produced in the process of reprinting some 33 Dunhill catalogs. Here's a brief summary of their contents, likewise drawn from the Pipedia page:

Loring Dunhill Catalog Compilation Summary.jpg
I'm sorry I don't have copies to review on your behalf. They're relatively scarce and very expensive when they appear on the market. In any case there is no guarantee they'd have your pipe rack; it's just a suggestion.

Good luck!
Jon
