My wife gave me a pipe as a gift (I had been talking about taking it up...), and so I've been smoking for just about a month now. The pipe she gave me was a part of a beginner kit she found, and she gave me some bulk tobacco from a local cigar shop. I've since picked up a corn cob pipe as well and tried out the MM Great Dane blend. I have enjoyed everything about this so far (well... except for the tongue bite I got on a first light—I'm learning).

I'm curious if you all could recommend a good "go to" tobacco for a beginner. I've read lots of reviews so far, and I'd like to try lots of things, but I want to start with a good standard bearer.

Hello and welcome from West Virginia. I recommend that you order some 1 oz. samplers from on-line. Get a selection of different type tobaccos-Codger, aromatic, non-aromatic, English, American English etc. so you can decide what you like. After you find the type of tobaccos you like then you are really ready to enjoy. Welcome aboard.

Boswells aromatics are hard to beat, but for a good and classic beginner blend, try sir Walter Raleigh, or the SWR aromatic blend. Classics that have survived the rest of time for a reason. Welcome, and congrats on an awesome and thoughtful wife.

I asked the same question last year in a different way. Many others have done the same. Review the forums and get some good advice.

Welcome from Virginia…
I wish I had a good recommendation for you but I’m at a loss. I started with drug store blends for the most part but remember really enjoying Orlik Golden Sliced the first time I tried it.
