Welcome from Florida. I would recommend the following tobacco blends. I have all of these in my cellar and if a blend makes into my cellar after a test tin, I know it will be bought in quantity. Here are some blends that are readily available. No sense chasing hard to finds right now.
Peterson Flake
Capstan Blue Flake
Mac Baren Old Dark Fired
Peterson Navy Rolls
Peterson Irish Flake
Savinelli Doblone d'Oro

I would read up on the different ways to smoke flakes. I prefer to fold and stuff, but in the beginning I went with cube cutting. It took some time to get the fold and stuff down perfectly but that is part of the journey.

Thanks so much for the suggestions. I will give them a try. I really am trying to find something akin to Old Gowrie. So difficult to come by. If I can get close I'll be pleased.

I'm still experimenting with the best way to smoke flakes. I haven't tried cube cutting yet. Will definitely give it a try.

For the fold and stuff method, I wonder if the shape of the bowl makes a big difference in the experience.

I honestly never thought about the shape of the bowl when folding and stuffing. Maybe it does matter and I just never noticed. Most of my pipes take a whole flake folded and stuffed. A few I might need to add more tobacco a couple I might have to use a little less. I have two group 6 pipes that definitely need more than one flake.
