Good morning folks! C W are the initials (hence CDub) and Money represents my profession.

I'm a 37 year old father of 2, the oldest is just over 2, and the younger isn't yet 1. Married to my wife for 4 years this year.

I started smoking cigarettes at 15, and in my college days, if it were tobacco, I was doing it. Cigarettes, pipes, cigars, dip, hookah, I did them all. Most of it (except cigarettes) was short lived. I did e-cigs probably around 10 years ago, but never found it as satisfying or reliable (a dose of nicotine) as cigarettes. Fortunately, after some 17 years, I kicked the cigarette smoking habit when I got married, and consider myself a non-user of tobacco products.

Last year, a group of like minded fraternity brothers got together at a local cigar bar. Then we did it again. And again. Soon, it was becoming a regular thing, and word was spreading as more brothers joined us. That cigar bar also offered Hookah. I have both a humidor of cigars, and a hookah at home, but rarely was the hookah used because of the time and effort required to set up it, then take it back down and clean it. So I typically would smoke the hookah instead of cigars at the bar since someone else was doing all the hard work. I also prefer the large billows of smoke that come from hookah smoking.

Recently, one of the brothers brought his pipe to one of our outings (not at the cigar bar), and I immediately was envious. I still had my 3 pipes (I couldn't tell you brands or even types, except one was a cob), but they were in storage. I brought them out of storage, cleaned them up, and got a carrying pouch, pipe stand, pipe tool for my birthday. I went to my local discount tobacco store that I knew sold pipe tobacco, and bought the cheapest stuff I could find before starting any research. That research lead me to pipesmagazine.com.

One of the reasons I quit smoking a pipe in college was the nearly constant tongue bite. More recent research suggests it's because I was likely trying to smoke my bowl too quickly. Both in an effort to keep it lit (as opposed to relighting as necessary), and because I prefer the thick smoke over thinner, whispy smoke. Slowing down, taking the time to learn how to pack a bowl properly, properly lighting and relighting as necessary has made for a far more pleasant experience.

But that cheap stuff from the discount store is... well... not good.

I have some specific questions in mind, but I'm going to save those for the Beginner question portion of the forums. I'm just glad to be here.

Welcome aboard from central North Carolina. I grew up in the Chicago area, and my wife grew up on a farm in the northeastern corner of Missouri, so we're midwesterners. One of her prized possessions is a piece of kitchen furniture called a Hoosier Hutch, which you may have heard of, a sort of all purpose cabinet and work station.

Welcome from Pennsylvania and New York.

I bought a hookah in 1984 on a trip to Israel, but never used it. It was more of a cheap souvenir and disintegrated over the years. I was heavily into cigars in the '90s, slowed down a lot, and got inspired again a couple of years ago; it also reawakened my interest in pipes. It's mostly been pipe smoking lately as it's been too cold to smoke cigars outside and pipes are tolerated indoors at our house.

To avoid tongue bite, smoke slowly, sip don't puff, and dry out your tobacco for a few hours (or a day) before packing, on a dish or in a shallow bowl. I found that non-aromatic blends are less prone to bite. For good thick smoke, Cavendish based blends or blends with Cavendish as a condiment work well.
