Hello everybody. I am a new pipe hobbyist, and new to the forum.

I was born and raised in Miami, and moved out west to California a few years ago to take advantage of cooler temperatures, hiking trails, and glorious national parks.

California in general, and my county in particular, is not very tobacco friendly. Lots of local legislation, and the fact that this state is extremely flammable, make smoking strictly prohibited almost everywhere. Despite this, I am happy to say that we still have a B&M nearby, and the owner (Doug) was super helpful in getting me started with my first pipe and a few house blends to explore.

That was earlier this year, and what a happy moment that was, buying my first pipe; a basket briar that I fired up as soon as I got back to my car (and then used to burn my tongue off)

I am grateful to the shopkeeper for the basic advice he gave me on packing, tamping and smoking. But most of what I have learned thus far seems to have come from reading, experimentation, and, well, you guys.

Thank you!

Welcome, from the central Oregon coast.

I lived in SoCal for many years. You picked the best part of California, in my opinion. I had planned on retiring there, but ended up here on the Oregon coast instead.

Welcome from So Cal. In addition to Boyd’s, the Sanctuary Tobacco Shop in SLO is worth a visit. Based on your Doug reference, you may have already been there.
Yep. That's the place. And that's the guy, Doug Shaw. All the house blends he carries have been renamed with a California mission theme. I walked out of there with a few blends called monastery, sanctuary and deacon (which is basically the PS luxury bullseye flake/coins). But damn, these B&Ms must be getting killed by taxation. A tin of Nightcap at his store was over $25. So I just settled on a few of his house blend recommendations, and later grabbed a few tins online.
