You hit the nail on the head for my favorite pairings as well. Stouts and Porters are preferred with Latakia blends, VAs and VAPers with Pale Ales and the like. I try not to drink very often when smoking as I've read it greatly increases the chances of mouth cancer compared to not drinking while smoking. I still do it once in a while, but the majority of my pipe smoking is with water these days.

I love beer with my pipes.
My wife thinks I drink too many beers with my pipe smoking.
Geez honey; leave me alone, I'm on vacation! Gimme a fricking break, would ya?

So far I have only found that smoking a pipe while drinking a beer only diminishes my enjoyment of each. I love doing both, and like many of you it would seem, I'm a fan of porters and stouts especially, but I find the beer overpowers the subtlety of some of the tobacco's flavours and the pipe smoking distracts me from enjoying a perfectly good beer. I've only been at pipe smoking for a little under 3 years so I'm still developing my pallet, habits and cadence. For the time being I am enjoying smoking with a big glass of water and enjoying my beer (or preferably scotch) on a separate occasion.

Chimay Bleue (Grande Reserve) with just about everything, particularly Latakia; the 9% ABV doesn't hurt, either!! Fantastic stuff!!!

It's not beer but I had a chance to enjoy a good VaPer with a Wicked Orchard Green Apple cider last week and it was a tasty combination.

Depending on circumstances, I'll drink, coffee, ice tea, water, booze or beer with my smoke. I match alcohol with beer on special occasions, not as a daily ritual.
My favorite craft beer is probably influenced by my place of residence. I live in Maryland, 5 minutes from DC, 30 minutes from Baltimore, Poe's home. It is the home of ) and it too, was inspired by Edgar Allen Poe.
Baltimore is the home for RavenBeer, which brews a half dozen or so different beers inspired by Poe. I especially enjoy their lager - it might be my favorite lager. The also make a good IPA and wit beer.
From the RavenBeer site. http://www.ravenbeer.com
Our beer was first conceived in Luxembourg between founders Stephen Demczuk and Wolfgang Stark (who recently passed away). Stephen was in Europe doing research in molecular biology and experienced its beer culture that lead to his mid-career crisis. He started writing about beer, and then tried to open a brewery in Arlon, Belgium but that faltered. He then formed the first beer-of-the-month club in Europe, Beer Around the World. Importing beer into Luxembourg, boxing it up and shipping it within the EU. One supplier of his beers was Wolfgang Stark of Haus de 131 Biere. Wolfgang imported beer from all over the world. He supplied Ngoma from Togo, Flame from New Zealand, and Lapin Kulta from Finland. One day Wolfgang asked Stephen if he would like to make a beer in Germany and using an American marketing theme. It took Stephen just a second to say yes and a day to come up with The Raven. The new company was registered in Baltimore and the new beer was eventually produced in Nagold, Germany and called in honor of Baltimore's Edgar Allan Poe The Raven Special Lager. We now also offer Pendulum Pils, Tell Tale Heart IPA, The Cask (Doppelbock), Annabel Lee White.

I also like a Stout with an English blend, when I smoke in mornings or afternoons though my favorite drink is coffee. In the evenings I've been enjoying wine quite a bit with my pipe. Seems quite a few of us have heeded the warnings about concomitant drinking, been thinking lately that I'm going to start limiting it to special occasions myself.

I love both, but I can't drink beer and smoke a pipe. The lone exception being Scottish ales, or any other devoid of hops. My palate seems to hold onto the hop flavor, really good if I'm drinking beer. If I smoke while drinking, or too close after drinking, all I can taste is an acrid, bitter stinging (on the back of the throat) sensation, sorta like licking black pepper an Comet.

I love a beer with my pipe, and pretty much drink only local Colorado beers from any number of our breweries.

@bragg.

It's good that you have some nice local breweries. We don't really have any around here that actually bottle their beer, so I'd have to drive quite aways to purchase any. I usually drink some when the local restaurants have them on tap.

But our neighbors in North Carolina and Georgia have some good stuff that's available around here, such as Highland Brewing, Oskar Blues, Terrapin, and Sweet Water Brewing.

Tennessee does have Blackstone Brewing out of Nashville. They have a couple of nice ones that I've tried, such as their English Style Nut Brown Ale, and their American Pale Ale.
Highland, Terrapin, and Sweet Water are my favorites though. Highland, in particular, has a very limited winter seasonal called Cold Mountain Winter Ale which is excellent! It's a special spiced ale, and it's amazing! I can't wait until it's available again!

I had a Founders Porter last night with some H&H Ambassador's Blend. I have a friend who's a brewer so I'm now exploiting his expertise, pestering him for recomendations. Don't think that he minds though. It's like asking anyone of us for a reccomendation on pipe tobacco; that's just opening the floodgates. Oh, you'll get your suggestions!, after a 30 minute exposition on the history of pre-republic Peterson.

I've not tried cider or hard cider with beer but I do like Twisted Tea with a good Va or VaPer now and then. It's a hard iced tea that tastes just like a slightly sweetened glass of ice tea, no alcohol taste at all. In a glass with some ice and a twist of lemon or lime and its very refreshing. :puffy:
