This is an old half burley and half Virginia blend. It does have a light casing of some sort, I cannot place a finger on what it is exactly. The casing is not overpowering so don't let that keep you from trying this blend. Now, let me start by saying I read alot of bad reviews on this blend else where and I was reluctant to try it for a long time. I finally broke down and bought a few pouches about a month ago. I find it to be a quiet satisfying blend over all. You taste the nuttiness of the burley and about a 1/4 of the way into the bowl you do start to pick up a little sweetness from the Virginians. As I said before the casing is light and gets milder throughout the bowl. In my opinion if you like Prince Albert, Carter hall, or any other burley blend I would recommend you try half and half. It is a nice break if you enjoy a number of primarily burley blends. I will warn you to smoke it slowly, if you puff to fast this blend will bite. It did in my experience, take it easy and you should enjoy this blend that has been around along time.

Nice review Sapo.
I never let bad reviews stop me from trying a blend. I will still try just to see if it is really as bad as some people say.
The only thing that I will do different on a blend that gets a lot of bad reviews is; I will only buy a small amount of it. No more than 2 ounces. That way if I don't end up liking it, I'm not out that much money.

That's why I only bought two pouches. It is fairly cheap so it wouldn't hurt my feeling to throw it out. I also try to smoke a good amount of a blend before I review it. Glad you liked the review, I'm sure I'll do quiet a few more in the future.

Nice Review Sapo59,

I would normally only buy one pouch at a time as well Bob.

However, when the wife went to the "store", I asked her to pick me up a pouch of Half and Half, just because I wanted to switch up for a few days.

She came back with a 14 oz. can. Which was actually very fortunate accident.

That is about the time I started my slow smoking experiments. I needed a tobacco that I could use to make comparisons of technique, a standard point of reference.

The texture of the Half and Half is very conducive for that application. The small particles pack well and burn evenly. Today's time 1 hour 15 minutes. That's now about average.

I have been pleasantly surprised by this tobacco. It's better than I remembered it.

I tried Half/Half for the first time about two months ago and it’s the only tobacco I've never been able to finish a complete bowl of because the taste was not to my liking. I like the green and red box but the contents are for the others who enjoy it.

The original Half&Half contained deer tongue. I read some reviews that said the blend has changed over the years. H&H is a blend that always makes me think that its what a pipe tobacco should smell like.

If you like it then you may want to consider C&D's Gentleman Caller as well. It reminds me of the original Half&Half blend as it also contains deer tongue.
