Yes, but from an American perspective (see what I did there?) not to mention many other linguistic perspectives, there is only one thing we call ourselves: Americans. And even if there is a broader usage of that word (there is) the primary usage means someone from the US. Francis was the first Argentinian and South American (more broadly), but also the first pope from the Americas. No one is disputing that. But by saying that the new guy is the first American pope, we are using the generally accepted primary usage of that term. There should be no dispute.

A couple screenshots from Wiktionary (which is very balanced and has lots of languages represented):

A misunderstanding of some folks as that we never called ourselves Americans as we are often snidely accused of. Our British overlords called us this because we lived in their American colonies. They called the French in Canada Canadians and then the name stuck when it became a nation governed by the British. At one point Canada was even called "British North America". Wild stuff. I guess everyone wants us to be called United Statesians instead. Just something else for people to nitpick about. Although when people ask where I am from, I usually say "The US"

Though I was forced to jump through the sacramental hoops to be confirmed as a Catholic, my religious beliefs could best be expressed by a shrug and an eye roll. That being said, I’m on board if this pope wants to institute a required post Mass lunch for the faithful:
