Before you're able to visit a good tobacconist, I'd advise that you order a heap of different genres by the ounce to give yourself an idea of where your preferences lay.
Tastes change over time so any blend not to your liking, just jar and shove in a cupboard.
Down the road you might find that you like it.
Pipes? Were I to start a rotation of pipes today, I'd start off with a Dr Grabow and a couple of MM cobs [just be aware that new cobs have a vegetal taste for the first couple of bowls]
Then if the bug bites you'll be then able to build a rotation of more expensive pipes at your leisure.
