Gov. Marvin Mandel - Broken Pipe

Former Maryland Governor, Marvin Mandel passed away yesterday. He was rarely photographed without a pipe in his hand. He favored Longchamp pipes and has a roomful of pipe at his mansion in Annapolis MD. I've met him several times over the last year. He knew I smoked pipes and invited me several times to his mansion and said "I need to give you some of my pipes". I never took the opportunity, and now lost.
This is the Governor and I at the Inauguration Ball in January. He said "you are the pipe guy, you are supposed to come and visit me".
Please don't make this thread about politics.

I don't know anything about the gentleman but any time someone invites you to his mansion to smoke a pipe, well, that's a class guy.

He was a great Governor. When I was with the Baltimore Police (1971-1985) I met him a few times. A class guy if there ever was one. I remember him smoking Longchamps, in fact it was his influence that got me smoking Longchamps back in 1983. Now I have a 7 Day set from the early 70's. May he Rest In Peace.

Looks like the room full of pipes is going up for auction. I picked up one so far.

I don't see a Charatan by that seller in the completed auctions, all low end stuff. I had no idea the pipes had been sold from his estate, guessing at an auction. I kept asking my wife to find out what happened to the pipes, but she didn't want to bother the family. The seller is located near me, I asked if it is possible to see the pipes in person.

A few nice ones there. I managed to score the only Grabow I saw, not anything special but got it on a lowball/last second bid.

First one of this shape for me and the history is a bonus :mrgreen:

I whiffed on two so far. It's curious that there are no Longchamps available, which were Mandel's favorite pipe. Only a few high grades as well. My wife emailed his attorney (MD lobbyist) that she works with. He was Mandel's handler in the past 10 years. I asked her to find out what happened to the rest of his collection.
