Hello. I went to my local cigar shop today. I learned alot talking to the staff there. I smelled alot of blends. Some I disliked. Ended up getting 5 different blends. Not sure what category they are all in. Also got two treated cob pipes. They had a large selection of briar pipes too.

Excited to try my first bowl later today. Thanks everybody for the help and advice.

Have fun with it. Don't feel defeated by relights; that's just what you do. Tamp very gently before relights to settle the tobacco and the ember.

In lighting up, you do puff a few times, but essentially the motif is more to sip at the pipe. Don't inhale.

Don't sweat some leftover unburnt tobacco leaf at the bottom of the chamber. It's called dottle. You usually get a little, and as you advance you'll get less, sometimes none, but it is not an issue.

The object is enjoyment. Take the whole process slowly in a relaxed frame of mind. Don't compete or try to excel.

Pack loosely. Dry some tobacco in a bowl to see if that helps some blends burn more evenly with fewer relights.

But enjoy. That's the deal.

Yes, this is a pleasurable hobby, but you have to learn how to smoke a pipe and it isn't obvious how you do it. Be sure to not overpack your pipe and be sure to smoke slowly.
I tell people smoking a pipe is easy but it is a skill and that skill while easy is counter intuitive. You have to at first fight what you think it's like and what you think it works like.

Remember to sip. Seeing lots of smoke after the initial light is watching your flavors go up the chimney.

Slow sips.
Right. A few days ago I was smoking at night outside and I almost couldn't see anything when the lighter wasn't lit. I had to "feel" how I was smoking instead of judging how things were going by the visual spectical of the smoke.
