Good day everyone,

I smoke a pipe in college but didn't know what I was doing (and lost it somewhere along the way!) and got back into it just over a month ago. When I was a lad, the smell of someone piping was a magical scent that I always found enjoyable. unfortunately my family was all cigarette smokers so I have to learn how to pipe through trial/error and wonderful resources such as these forums.

I started again with some good old fashioned drug store specials, a cob(removed the filter) and some Captain Black Gold because it smelled the best out of the OTC selections I had. Since then I have invested in a Peterson Killarney Red 338 (a disappointment, the holes aren't drilled properly so I can't get a cleaner all the way through) and some C&D blends (OJK red and white, oriental silk, star of the east gold, and epiphany). I also picked up a Capri Gozzo #4. I smoked these for a few weeks and recently got a Savinelli ONE 601 beginner kit (I put the adapter instead of the filter in) and a few more MM cobs.

I also picked up some other aromatics like Mac Baren Seven Seas Gold, Lane 1Q and 1000 which I smoke out the cobs. As of yesterday I really noticed that I enjoy the rich smokiness of the non-aro blends like Star of the East and the OJKs. I tried the Seven Seas today and it doesn't have the same depth of flavor, hope that I come back to these as I truly enjoy the scent of the Gold blends but my taste buds tell me its lame.

I got a box of goodies today that I am looking to break into over the next few weeks including;
Mac Baren - 7 seas white
4th generation - morning blend
Peterson - 965/irish whiskey/early morning pipe
C&D - Sea Dog
Seattle Pipe Club - Wild Man

I have lots of questions but I think that time spent smoking will clear most of them up. The one thing that does make me wonder is that all 3 of my pipes are gurgling - sometimes I know it was wet tobacco or smoking too quickly so that just more trial/error until I find the sweet spot for moisture level in the tobacco.

The one question I really have is can I continue to smoke through the gurgle or should I stop and run the pipe cleaner through? The reason I ask is that I can't run the cleaner through the Peterson and it doesn't always want to go through the other 2 either. Will smoking through the gurgle damage the pipes? or just create some nasty liquids that sometimes travel up the stem?

Thanks in advance, looking forward to being part of the community.

Have a great day,
Walter

Welcome from North Carolina.
Yes, run a pipe cleaner through the stem to absorb some of the moisture. For a cob, pull out the stem and blow through it. Heck, I do that to some of my briars too.

A full bent shape like the Peterson will be much harder to drill so that a pipe cleaner will pass. The Savinelli should not have such a problem. I have similar shapes such as the 626 and they are always drilled very well. I very rarely resort to using a cleaner during a smoke and usually deal with an occasional gurgle just by using a slightly more forceful puff back through the pipe.

BTW, I was born in Jersey City and lived in Carteret and Landing for some time, so just curious whereabouts in Jersey you're located.

Welcome from Central Texas. If your pipe gurgles, that is a prelude to some bad tasting condensation that you are about to get (unless you are smoking with a filter). It should not hurt your pipe, but can lead to ghosting residual in your briar.
It has been years since I have experienced a lot of gurgling, but my advice is to let the pipe cool, break it apart and lightly clean with pipe cleaners.
Letting your tobacco dry a bit before you pack it will certainly help ad well.
Find your own routine and enjoy!

Iraish. Living in Morris county it in farm country. Used to work up in Landing.

Thanks for the advice, drying the tobacco seems to be the solution. The worst part is the liquid that gets sucked through the stem. I run a cleaner after every smoke and if it doesn't go all the way I wait until the pipe is cool and then break it down and run a cleaner.

Just smoked to Sav for the first time with what i thought was dry CD Epiphany and got the gurgle. Tried to run a cleaner through, was able to get it past the filter adapter but it didn't go all the way though(checked after i finished the bowl)

Eh, live and learn.

Is it wrong that I just want to keep smoking all day? I'm like a teenager that just discovered boobs.

And does anyone know any B&M in Jersey? I looked the other day and all the smoke shops I visited were just head shops selling accessories for smoking pot.

Welcome from the Hudson Valley. If I’m outside I often flick the moisture out. Hold your palm over the bowl and flick your wrist slams the moisture will fly out of the stem. This works well when you don’t have a cleaner handy or the pipe doesn’t pass a cleaner. You can also put the cleaner in as far as it will go and tilt the pipe back. The condensation will go to the cleaner.

@OldWill said it best--let your leaf dry adequately beforehand. Trust me, it's a strategy that will transform your smoking experience. As for the amount of time, that will vary from blend genre to blend genre, on top of the subtler variations between blends within any given genre. You'll figure out what works right with time, and before long, it'll be second nature.

Oh, and welcome to the forum, from Southern California. Enjoy the journey! ?
