Question...
When you say that you "went deep" purchasing/cellaring a certain types of tobacco, how do you define "deep".
I know that this is dependent of a lot of variables. Was just wondering.

I have heard 100 pounds seems the be the consensus when cellaring. My smoking habits(3-4 pipes a week) are different as the next guy, but I have about 30 pounds and try to stay around that. I buy from time to time to keep the pool full.

For me, the threshold of going deep would be 3 pounds of a particular blend, though I know guys who would triple that number and one guy who keeps a minimum 30 lbs of each of his favorite blends cellared at any one time. So going deep is a subjective number.

I would consider a minimum of 50 tins or 5.5 pounds of one particular blend to be cellaring deep. The single most tins I have of one blend is around 200 or 22 pounds.

Deep to me is 2-3 lbs. I've got a couple blends with 10-12 lbs.

For me in my world I think my cellar is wide, so I may not go as deep. I have about 300 blends opened and jarred. I have about 50 that I go deep on. Deep for me is 50 - 50gr tins or about 6 to 10 pounds of bulk. For my 300 blends some are one tin and others could be 20 or more.
I have blends I have cellared that I don't particularly love but could see my tastes moving in that direction in the future. If tobacco becomes unobtainable I don't have to worry about changing taste. If it doesn't and is still readily available then I don't have to worry either.

For me 'going deep' means 10 tins plus, I've only aquired this much with 3 tobaccos which were PPP, Dunhill Dark Flake and Warrior Plug.

I would like to go deeper on a few more blends but funds are not sufficient at this moment in time.

50 tins would be deep for me.
By tin OGS is my largest with around 90 tins. By weight HH Vintage Syrian is my largest with 88lbs.

I tend to cellar my favorite flake tobaccos most often.
Something about seeing a big bunch of your favorite coins/flakes that just makes you want to stack it high. You tell yourself it's enough. But, then when you have the opportunity, you grab another pound.

A lifetime's worth is deep. I'm good for a few bowls a week of McClelland VAs only because of the circumstances.

5-6 lbs for my top favorites, 3 lbs for second tier favorites. I like to keep a good variety so my cellar is pretty wide as well, so I think I’m really well stocked on enough favorites to last a long time while being able to change it up.

If we use the 10 bowls per oz rule, and if a surveyor can do arithmetic without botching it, this equates to about a bowl per day for 38.5 years.
I'm not sure it gets much deeper than that.
Also with 3.5 oz tins going for roughly $30-40 these days, this equates to, and again, these numbers are merely a rough approximation............ 1 Assload of American dollars.

For me, it's 10+ cans or 500 gms is "deep". Guessing that there is about 25 blends in my cellar in that category.
I have just a couple of all-timers with 5+ pounds, but not many. I try and get them in bulk.
I have a solid collection of many blends, but all my collecting in the past 3-4 years has been flake Virginia's.

Funny how times change. In 2012 you could get the one pound bags of Vintage Syrian for $35.
