EDIT: Fixed Capitalization in Title (See Rule 9) - Bob

With all the incoming Anti- tobacco legislation, things don't look very rosy for the pipe smoker. Or for at least online tobacco purchases.

There is one thing that you can do about it:
Plant some seeds. Raise your own. F*ck 'em.

A man can even grow a couple of plants on his balcony if that is all the space you have. It's not very difficult and your fore fathers will be proud of you.
Most of us come from a long line of independent farmers- so it's in your blood. In the Northern hemisphere, you can start them anytime in the next couple of months. You can easily find pipe strains online or maybe, just maybe, I can find some pipe friendly seeds for you.

You know, I may actually finally do this. We have a large garden area (~20' x 12') that we use for the usual veggie plants. I'm sure I could find room to plant 5-10 tobacco plants. And I have a shed that I can hang them in to dry.

I've been looking online at buying whole leaves, but maybe I should add in some seeds too. I'll have to dig into this some more. I have no excuse except for a lack of momentum.

I may PM you soon for some tips for recommended plants for my area (southern Minnesota, Zone 4b), if that's okay.

Tobacco is a very easy plant... a weed. Deer leave it alone so it's about the only plant left I can grow.

Getting seedlings from seed is a bit of a pain. Still not hard, but a bit of a pain. However, tobacco *plants* are available online.

Curing ("fermenting") is a thing. However, it can be accomplished by aging for years.

So....

Everybody should get a few plants now. Stick them in a flower bed... anywhere. They'll grow without much soil preparation even (but not too well in a pot).

You'll try the tobacco fresh, everyone does. When you do and decide growing sucks and curing is rocket science, bundle those leaves loosely in a cardboard box and stick that in the basement.

Cutting right to the chase I see!
Then, in a couple years you will have some homegrown tobacco which you may or may not like.
You left out, "You'll try the tobacco fresh, everyone does." at the beginning of that paragraph.
I personally like tobacco with no casing, etc. *way* more than anything I've ever bought. I've been growing for a few years.
That may not be the case for everybody.

Point was, if you buy plants it's ridiculously easy to grow. And that, if you grow some and then forget about it in your basement for a while, you will have some super cheap tobacco you grew yourself to find out if you like it
.

Dave,
Actually, the first year that you plant & harvest, you will reap what you sow! It won't take years.
About 35 years ago, I lived among the Amish in PA. they would grow their own tobacco. They would "air dry" their tobacco (hanging them in their barns). By winter they were smoking their own tobacco.
For Cavendish, they would use a large metal colander placed over a large pot of boiling water with the leaves (center stem removed) - watch your leaves, when they are dark enough for your tastes remove them (may need to keep taking them out of the colander and re-arranging them to steam them properly - but you can find instructions on the NET). After, stack them on each over, place a 'plank' ( a little larger than the leaves) on the leaves with about 5# on the plank. after they are dried again, remove the plank and slice into ribbons (they will be like a brick) and cut to your desired size.
In a few months from planting until your Cavendish is ready, you will have your own tobacco.
You can go to this site; Whole Leaf Tobacco – Distributors of american grown tobacco, imported cigar tobacco, genuine Virginia Bright Leaf, Virginia Lemon, imported Turkish Tobacco and more at the best prices available anywhere. - https://wholeleaftobacco.com to find machines to cut your tobacco the way you want it.
I do. Last year I had a couple of tobacco plants out back. God willing, I will have more this year.
ENJOY!

Great thread. I know those Aussies need to get in on this.
Hello Richmond,

Here are a few links and posts that may help you;

Perique style fermentation - http://www.brothersofbriar.com/t26980-perique-style-fermentation - for smaller "HOME" base PERIQUE.

You can make smaller batches of PERIQUE - the time will still be about the same, but you can do it at home.
Even a "BOTTLE JACK" can be used to apply pressure on a lid over the tobacco leaves.
Nice part, you do not 'NEED' an OAK barrel. You can cut down the initial overhead costs and still get a good product.

If you want to know about "CURING" tobacco leaves; Tobacco Leaf Harvesting Curing and Fermenting. - https://www.leafonly.com/tobacco-harvesting-curing-fermenting.php

another nice article for "HOME" use; How to Grow and Cure Tobacco at Home - https://dengarden.com/gardening/Tobacco-Growing-and-Curing-at-Home

This article even shows how to build your own "CURING" barn; Build Your Own Tobacco Curing Chamber and How to Cure Tobacco - https://www.coffinails.com/curing_tobacco.html

May the GOD OF ALL CREATION give you everything you need.

Just to clarify. Im not selling seeds. But PM me. I'll give you some.
Also. To our Aussie brothers. PM me. We're in this together and we are from the same stock as you.
DOC,
I like your spirit!. Thanks, from the Flowers last year, I have enough (even more than enough), to start this year.
That is the great part about growing you own, the plants produce seeds, so if you save them, you will always have enough for the next season.

May the GOD OF ALL CREATION multiply your harvests.
