Hello all. Just looking for some advice on a few specific tobaccos. Keen to know your experiences with any of these options.
They are listed as having a 'very strong' nicotine content. I am leaning towards option 1. As the rope form looks a bit daunting (I am still a new smoker).

1) Gawith Hoggarth (Dark A Blend Flake - Aromatic) Pipe Tobacco

2) Gawith Hoggarth Hand Spun Brown Bogie Rope Pipe Tobacco

3) Gawith Hoggarth Hand Spun Brown Pigtail Pipe Tobacco

4) Gawith Hoggarth Hand Spun Black Pigtail Pipe Tobacco

First, I hope that nicotine is something in which you are very used to...

1, I guess you mean Dark Flake scented... It is one of my favorite before bed smokes. I actually prefer the unscented more, but the scent isn't so bad once you get used to it. It isn't as "grandma's panty" smelling as some other lakelands, but the scent is strong... more like a cosmopolitan aroma, complex, sophisticated...

The differences between bogie and pigtail is very subtle. I would probably fail a taste test between these, but I do know that the darker varieties has more char flavor than the browns, but the browns has way more nicotine. I like them all. I even like the coconut scented ropes.

All of these are in my rotation for a before bed smoke, but the Dark Flake unscented is still my all time favorite. They give me plenty of nicotine to make me all droopy eyed before bed. I don't smoke them in the day time, as I tend to lay down for a nap when I do. They put me right to sleep.

I hope you enjoy them.

Thanks very much for that. I think I'll order the flake (the aromatic option is the only available to me atm) and some brown rope as well.

That droopy knock out feeling is what I'm after tbh. I got that affect when I started pipe smoking with HH ODF but now it eludes me. I have a somewhat strong constitution, which can be a blessing and curse.

Again thanks for the advice. You seem to know what you're saying.

I have not smoked any of them. Not because I don't want to try them, but because, at least in the US, they are not easy to obtain.
Swings and roundabouts... It's unfortunate that it's difficult to obtain for you. Although if you look at the price differences in tobaccos for us here in the UK (and most of Europe), I'm sure you wouldn't want to trade places ha ha.

Hope you get a chance to try it sometime though!

Be careful, I take a week off from using it as a sleep aid each month, because once you get used to smoking brown pigtail, your only option to get to sleep from getting more nicotine is just eating the tobacco. puffy

You might be interested in Cotton Boll Twist (spelled Boll, like a Boll of cotton) It drives me nuts when people say bowl or boil, ha ha. It is a pipe/chewing tobacco made mostly of rustica, the strongest tobacco I know of. I don't live in a state that allows it to be shipped, so I have to get someone to middle-man it for me.

Nice. All cloak and dagger. Makes it probably even more enjoyable I bet ha ha.
I'll look into it. Thanks.

What's your opinion on maybe mixing some of these high nic' blends into custom blends?

Cheers Michael.

I picked up a ton of tins of Molto Dolce when I first started cellaring, because it had won so many awards, but as I got into the hobby deeper, I realized that Molto Dolce is crap, especially in the nicotine department. So, I kick it up a notch by mixing it 50/50 with sliced GH&co Coconut Twist. Now, I love it.

On the scents and flavors of the Dark Flake and the twists... you just have to smell them to understand. They just don't go with anything I can think of. They are very unique.

ha ha... somehow that makes them sound even better. Maybe just have to find the right beverage to compliment them.

Glad you found a use for your Molto Dolce. I felt the same way about HH Latakia flake... too weak. But mixing it with ODF allows me to enjoy it sans frustration hah

I rely on these blends for my morning smoke when I'm in nicotine withdrawl. They are excellent in flavor, burning quality and God yes, they deliver the nicotine.

My favorite is the Unscented, non-aromatic version of Dark Flake. Very deep, smokey, and slightly floral flavors. Just a fantastic smoke. I've only had a sample of the scented/aromatic version. Also good, but a bit too scented for regular smoking for me. It is probably the strongest tobacco I have tried, more so than even the ropes. The brown ropes are very good as well, though. I use a double-bladed cigar cutter to slice off thin coins, which I rub out. I haven't had the black ropes, but my understanding is that they stove the wrapper, which changes the flavor and maybe mellows it out a bit in terms of the nicotine. The main difference between the brown ropes, I believe, is the thickness. The pigtail is a bit thinner. Right now, I've become kind of smitten with 1792 Flake (I believe it's called Cob Flake over there). Very similar to Dark Flake, but it has different flavorings. Wonderful stuff.

Try Brown Flake Scented. Flavorings about the same as Dark Flake Scented, but Brown Flake isn’t wimped out by the extra cooking Dark Flake gets to civilize it. The balance between the underlying tobacco and the flavorings is much more harmonious. IMO

Funny how people are so different. Many of the GH blends I love would have me wide awake if I smoked them at bedtime. Wish I had known about them in college when I took No Doz to pull all nighters. When I am really feeling groggy in the mornings, though, Happy Bogie is like putting jumper cables on the synapses. Things start to move.

Interesting how nicotine can be used as both stimulant and relaxant ha ha. I suppose it might be how you "hit" it. Or maybe it just makes you more efficient. More efficient at getting to sleep or more efficient at working.

New forum format and members, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised.
Over the years we have had members with more biological and chemical knowledge than me explain how nicotine works on the body and mind. But, my layman's understanding is that nicotine is neither a stimulant nor a relaxant (word?). But, it is all in how the blood sugars react with the nicotine. The pipe has tons more nicotine than a cigarette, but it is all in the delivery. It takes much longer for our bodies to ingest the nicotine, but at the onset of smoking your pipe, the body releases stored sugars into the blood, which gives us the higher heart rates and the illusion of more energy, like what cigarettes do when ingested straight into the lungs. But, once you reach the threshold of nicotine poisoning, the sugars are depleted and the body starts to feel tired, stomach gets queasy, and you can get the spins. You can offset this by eating a nibble of chocolate or something that can quickly give you more sugars. But, if you just continue to smoke, you can smoke into a sleepiness.

I've seen first time cigar smokers, hunker over asleep and green in the bathroom of The Briary a few times. I have also had a friend who fell asleep on his deck while smoking University Flake on his back deck and awoke with his pipe in hand. Many others have reported similar things on here over the years.

I used to have a real problem with insomnia for decades before I started smoking a pipe. I am a go go go kind of person, and my doctor had to prescribe sleeping pills to get me to conquer days upon days of no sleep. But, when I started smoking my pipe and found the heavy twists and flakes, I was able to go to sleep without having to use the pills, and have not used them since taking up this "hobby," for lack of a better word.

Yeh, I get a little bit of that rush when I smoke Virginias and vapers throughout the day, and I keep a pipe lit and in my clench pretty much all day. But, at night, I will smoke a twists till I get that droopy eyed feeling and then just slide over into my bed and sleep like a baby. A few times I have had my wife wake me up and force me to bed, because I fell asleep while smoking, which is unusual for a guy who used to have a problem with even sitting down for long periods of time at night.

Maybe someone else can offer the exact affects of nicotine and such with all of the big words, but I believe I have the Reader's Digest version down, ha ha. Hope that helps.

The same tobacco but different size twist. Brown Irish X is the traditional twist size. Bogie is thinner, making it easier to cut and rub out.

How come everytime some one brings up high nic, G&H comes up. Is that their gimmick or selling point or just happens to be the way they do things?
