So, I'll admit it: I followed the link to mkelaw's site and bought my first (estate) Tsuge.
A very nice selection of pipes, and exceedingly good customer service.

Not always. Plenty of unused pre-owned collectibles still sealed in the box that are sold on ebay. Unsmoked estate pipes are very often found. These were estate purchases that were unsmoked ie. unused.
