There's this little antique shop right across the street from my barber. Usually I go early in the morning for a haircut and the antique shop is always closed, opens at noon. Today, the antique shop was open early. After my haircut I raced across the street and I asked the woman if she had any tobacco pipe related items. She had three pipes, a newer cob, an unmarked briar pipe and a Barling. I bought the Barling for $4.50...it needs work, for sure, which I'm not going to do. I'm going to pass it onto someone else who is interested in cleaning up. The shape that it's in is way out of my league.
Here it is:

Sorry, the pics are horrible. As for age, I have no clue...I'd guess 1950's...probably wrong.

Very nice snag! Look at the underside of the stem and see if there's any remnant of a stamp near where it joins to the shank. If it has a REG'd number, it's post war thru early 1951. If it says Barling DESIGN it's early 1951 thru early 1962.
The stampings are so faint, but yes I do see a couple of numbers...the last number looks like 4. I could be wrong...really faint.

Also, after looking at it with a magnifying glass it states
MADE IN
ENGLAND
not MADE IN ENGLAND in one line across.

Okay, that dates the pipe to roughly 1947 to early 1951.

You can see characters stamped on the underside of the stem near the shank?

If so, that's interesting. The stem looks 100% like a replacement in cut and saddle profile.
If there are numbers, they are so faint maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me. I think I see a 4, maybe not. Sorry.
