While perusing the Interwebs, saw this listing and immediately I was taken aback. Has this pipe been misstamped? I collect 05 and it’s derivatives (XL11, 05s, 305, XL315) and this is definitely NOT the normal 305 shape. EF422563-E43F-4079-A024-4BD167624528.jpeg

I've seen a couple of other examples of mid republic era xl305s with this kind of deeper cut transition, more classic Dublin shaped bowl, and more obtuse bend angle... this is probably the most extreme deviation I've seen, though, especially regarding shank angle.

@BROBS do you know what's up? Era when the Peterson guys were smoking something other than tabak in their pipes? A different kind of Irish green??☘

this is a straight up Dublin, Bears no resemblance whatsoever to 305 shape (and 305 isn’t an XL shape). Plus this is a modern piece, the stamping is all modern STG era. I’ve seen rustic Dublin’s given a generic “calabash” name by Peterson, but this has me stumped.

@Aomalley27 The stamping in your picture shows it to be a Republic Era pipe.
I did a little research, and it's a rare-ish "Old Style XL305" that "hasn't been made since the 70s"
according to @chuckw.

Wow! I'm astounded!! Thanks for the link to the blog. I never considered before that a Dublin shape is a precursor to a 305 or variation (xl305, x.315 . . . ). BTW-I do LOVE the xl305/xl315 shapes and sizes and have several lined up on my pipe rack shelf for daily rotation.
kind regards,
mike
