I picked up this "Flamex" brand pipe lighter at a flea market today. It is unused and included the the box and operator booklet. I attempted to fill it with the butane nozzle used to fill my Thunderbird Zippo inserts, but it is too large. Does anyone have any idea on what brand/type butane might fit this tiny tube? It looks like a handy lighter to use and I'm curious as to how it works.

What papiprguy said. If you buy the Xicar butane it comes with a ring of adapters that will fit almost anything.

My can of "Jet" brand butane has five adaptors. I'm using #4 for my Zippo. #5 is missing and I suspect might have worked. I'm due for another can soon, will take that lighter along.
I don't understand what makes the gas turn on, do you think it is activated by the striker wheel? My Zippo butane opens with the lid release.

Hey, Al, did it look like this one:

I picked it up today and found this old thread when searching for info on it. How did yours work for you?

Thanks lumberjakpipester. It works pretty well except for the flame adjustment seems to not be working properly, sometimes giving me s flamethrower size light!

I have one that's exactly like the one in the picture with the pipe logo:

...it's valve is almost like a needle, it's crazy. I did manage to fill it and it works pretty well although it is a small volume tank.

Do they still make the Flamex Lighter? This is the first time I've seen one. Greg, your's looks a little like the Vector Armor Dual Flame. Does it have a torch as well as a side soft flame?

I don't know if they still make them or not but this one is an old one, 1950s I think. It is a single, soft flame lighter, no torch. Here are a couple of quick shots I just took of it:

here's the style that I found, I love the 'lil pipe, but the butane tank is very small and it's a pain to fill due to the weird needle valve. I don't use it very often.

I bought a Flamex off of EBay and need the little plug that covers the butane intake valve & flame adjustment screw. Does anyone know a source for this?
Thanks,

Dan
