As a cigar smoker the world of pipe tobacco has always intrigued me, and finally getting some time to myself after the new year allowed me to explore this interest further. While researching the topic I stumbled upon this forum and found several posts that were especially informative. So much so that I am now ready to make my first purchase. I thought I would ask for some input before I click the "checkout" button.
I have come to the conclusion that I should try a variety of tobacco's to hone in on my favorite style, picking the most popular or most standard tobacco's of each category. This is where I may need some help,
Aromatic: Captain Black Royal

Cavendish: Lane 1Q

English: Dunhill Standard Mixture

Virginia Perique: Peterson Irish Oak

Virginia: Peterson Sherlock Holmes
I know this is a subject of some debate, but I just wanted to make sure I didn't make any clear errors in my logic.

I was planning on buying a couple corn cobs pipes and pipe tools, and then later purchasing a briar pipe somewhere around 100$.
Thanks for all the great posts.

All taste is personal preference so people might offer different opinions but those blends you listed have proven themselfs to be pretty well liked, I say you have done your homework right. Only thing else I can suggest is some sites sell samplers, I personally use pipeandcigars so I know there samplers pretty well, they offer a hearth and homes sample where you can try some really great blends for pretty cheap.

Welcome aboard Pitt!
Don't be afraid to shelve something that you might not love at first puff. Sometimes it takes a bit to get everything to fall into place. Packing, tamping, puffing, etc.
Get those basics down and play with variations on them. I still screw the pooch sometimes on a pack job and can taste the difference in a tobacco.
Let us know how it's going.
