Where NY, CT & MA meet
This blend has been mentioned so many times that I finally broke down and ordered a tin. Cracked it open and was pleased by the subtle plummy tin note, the almost perfect tin moisture, easy to pack cut and the colorful array of tobacco including a smidgen of black - not cavendish, but Latakia! This is one of those genre defying blends that can either be something for everyone or a total miss on all sides. In my opinion, definitely the former!

First flame kicks off the smoke with a subtly sweet, round tobacco flavor with barely a hint of Latakia smokiness. The topping is gentle and really supports the flavor and character of the blend as a whole, rather than defining it. The flavor is fairly consistent throughout the bowl and, while it can get a little hot if pushed (it’s me, so yeah it does puffy) it never becomes harsh or unpleasant and has no bite at all. This could be an all day smoke. Reminds me a bit of the original Frog Morton probably with less Latakia presence (haven’t smoked that in almost 2 decades so take that comment for the nostalgic recollection it may be). Not enough L to be considered an English. Not enough A to be an aromatic but a really great, enjoyable smoke. If I were looking for an all day smoke this could be one. I’m not but this will find a definite home in my rotation and is a blend to keep around for the long term. Hats of to @jiminks for championing EGR and making sure it stays around!

Great review! If not for the Latakia I think I’d really enjoy it.

Good share Ofafeather. ? I started smoking EGR in the winter; both from branching out into codger Burley and Jim's shares on the 'What are you Smoking?' threads. I dig it quite a bit. If a smoker is starting to dip their toes into the codger Burley segment, EGR goes a unique direction compared to DCC, Mix 79, RR Match, Golden, etc. Latakia is not so strong to overwhelm at all, but if you flat don't like it this may not be your jam. You can puff at a decent rate without pushing it harsh....but the wine/stone fruit note shows up best with a slower cadence (at least for me).

It plays one note.....but it's a unique and tasty note.

You sure do make it sound pretty good. Only ever seen this blend talked about here and never really gave it a second thought. Sounds interesting enough to maybe grab a tin.
do it. It is interesting. Even if you don't really enjoy it. You'll find it to be a unique enough blend to be worth burning through a few bowls of. It's one of those in it's own category blends.

It would be on the border for you. It’s very faint.
@BROBS yeah it is. It's less like it has latakia and more like it magically makes the pipe your smoking it in have the faintest latakia ghost. You know the kind of ghost you aren't sure if the pipes ghosted with it or you where just thinking about that tobacco and your brain filled in the gaps. You would have too really despise latakia to an almost fanatical level for it to effect your opinion of this blend, like not I don't smoke latakia but more like latakia kidnapped tortured and murdered your family and got away with it level of hate.

jiminks was active in getting this classic revived. I'm going to have to pop my tin of it some day soon. I have so many blends open, it keeps getting put off. I've sampled this with much enjoyment at a pipe show. The Lat in it is fine with me. The problem with Lat is that it is overused, as is Perique in my opinion. There are so many good condiment tobaccos, it is a shame to overuse good ones as default condiments, but it goes well in EGR to my taste.

How do you know my Latakia story, word for word?!

Oh, from your response earlier I thought you meant that hadn’t tried it and are hesitant due to the lat.
Nope I liked it in general at first but the lat made me not smoke it after a while.

so far the only lat I can enjoy is Old Black Magic... which I can still taste the lat but it’s acceptable.
