With pipes that have an inside bevel atop the bowl I can use any of my non pipe butane lighters w/o issue, for flat top pipes I tend to use either my Dunhill Rollagas with pipe flame or my Caran d'Ache with pipe flame, with corn cobs I go with my Zippo with the pipe lighter butane insert and for any metal capped pipes I grab my St. Dupont.
I find getting the pipe lit w/o interference from the wind prevents most char on pipe rims, I don't mind it on my cobs as it looks fumed and kind of like it belongs there, as long as it's not burned. If I have to wait and light the tobacco on a different side then tamp I do, the photo you see was taken after the tobacco expands from initial lighting it is then tamped Dow and relit if needed.

I always use a rough rag soaked in strong black coffee and it cleans up rim char quickly, regards.
