This was my first attempt at cleaning up an estate pipe, an Hardcastle's Jack O' London shape 92, I believe made between 1946-1967, before Dunhill fully took over. The condition wasn't too bad other than a lot of grime on the exterior and the cake/tobacco still in the bowl.
With limited restoration supplies, this is the result. The stem is not perfect but that's okay, and the paint on the stem logo was very faint. It is now non-existent thanks to magic erasers. I'm not quite sure how to clean a stem without affecting the logo. All in all I'm pretty happy with the result and will be smoking this ol dog shortly.

It doesn't look like a 'dog until the last picture, but there it is indeed a lovely old dog, sans bead line. For years, Iwan Ries had a nice grouping of Hardcastles for $40, in the last six years or so, but they finally came down. I think they had brass or copper bands. Not fancy pipes, but I bet they were good smokers, probably quite old but unused.

Looks great! Be warned however that restoring old beauties is far more addictive than regular PAD.

Thanks everyone. Chasing, I believe you. It was totally satisfying cleaning it up.
I almost passed on this pipe thinking the amount of gunk was beyond my skills, but it worked out pretty well, with simple materials.
This forum is full of knowledge and resources, and is turning me into a real junkie enthusiast.

Sunny Cornwall, UK.
Hardcastle pipes are much underrated in my book. I have several including a couple of Jack 'O' London models and they're all great smokers.
The same applies to Parker pipes, cheap to buy new but smoke perfectly.
Regards,
Jay.
