Finger or Tamper?

Both as the ash is sometimes so fine that a finger will not do a good job of it or makes a bit of a mess (light powdery ash flies everywhere)... like this morning.
A gentle tamp. Not a quick jab with the finger. No reason for ash to be flying everywhere. Just gentle tamp and I usually give my finger a bit of a twist to nestle the tobacco and ash.
While I like the “idea” of using my British Rodgers pipe knife, the damn tamper is tiny. The ubiquitous pipe nail works the best. Could I weld a small steel circle to my Rodgers tamper? My finger worked when I had calloused carpenter fingers, but now that I’m old and lazy, I need to re-engineer my pipe knife. Any suggestions from you welders?
I usually use a tamper unless I’m away from home and forgot to bring it with me, then I use a finger.
I try not to use my finger these days. Why? Well cause it's gross. Idk how you guys don't get that shit all up in your finger nails.
Finger and tamper. Doesn’t matter to me. Both work.

I can relate as I live alone as well. I do have a dog I can blame!That is so true, the older you get the more things disappear. This is even more frustrating when you live along and have no one to blame.
I generally try to use a tamper or a pipe nail or whatever else is handy....I have gotten soft in Retirement, and don't want to burn my finger...I have enough trouble typing as it is.... 
I've gotten pretty lazy about carrying a tamper. Finger 90% of the time, random stuff 10%.
Tamper….if I use my finger it tends to burn when I tamp down the coals using my finger hahahaha ?
It's that nasty orange finger that's the worst.. When you go for your old lady and you can tell she spotted it. It's not very attractive, I'd guess.
