And Ginger Rogers did all that in high heels…
They based Christopher Walken's routine in the Fatboy Slim Weapon of Choice video on this performance.
Bleeding feet, strained joints, significant amounts of pain, the show must go on. I think that the stateroom scene in Royal Wedding is one of the most remarkable bits Astaire did.I recall reading that in multiple productions her feet (and those of Mr. Astaire) were literally bleeding by the end of their dance routines, but, being troupers, neither demanded a stop to filming because of it. They both knew that the secret was to make the finished product look easy.
Tap is alive and well. In LA, The Colburn School Of Performing Arts offered classes in tap. Years ago, when my son was taking classes there I peeked on a tap dancing class. I wish I could remember the teacher's name, but he was a legendary name in dance, and was in his early 90's. I was astonished as he went into a routine so complex that it would have killed me, and did it with fluidity and ease. He was running those teenaged dancers absolutely ragged.Tap dancing just didn’t stand the test of time. I don’t even see the dance studios listing it any more.
But, that’s some amazing foot work!!!
