For those who want to spend their vacation pretending they're Hunter Thompson on assignment without having to drop acid:
Robotel: Japan hotel staffed by robot dinosaurs

I don’t know about Hunter S Thompson, his writings always sound more like nightmares to me. I think that this would be great for kids though. Like a hotel/Chucky Cheese type thing. But, they can’t last more than a few years before the animatronics start to work like shit. This was one of my turn offs to Disney World. Made for babies and fake as crap. Don’t tell Brian Levine that I said that though, ha ha.

Yeah, you sure hear a lot about AI these days.
My take on it: I really don't believe it's possible for computers to achieve consciousness and become "self aware" no matter how fast or advanced they get...but that notion seems to be continually promoted. Why?
Perhaps the public is being conditioned to believe in the nebulous "AI" so that if the killer robots are ever released everyone will accept the idea that AI did it.
Like in 2001, it seemed as though HAL was acting autonomously, but in the end we learned that he had been programmed to do what he did.
Godzilla would've been my first choice.
Great idea Cortez.
Oh no, there goes Tokyo!

Well, it was certainly a nightmare for the kid they picked up on the highway in the desert.

The culture shock of Tokyo itself would do it, no robotics needed. I have a friend who, as a child, a military brat as she called herself, was allowed to trek around Tokyo by herself. At the time, totally safe, and she must have had excellent navigational instincts. She remembers it as a golden age in her life.

I have a feeling that Hunter, although plenty bright, never read Kierkegaard, due to his vaunted recreational pursuits.

At some point, computers will "simulate" consciousness. For now, AI (Artificial Intelligence) is a lot different than that. It's simply taking programming a few steps further and having the computer do more than just a simple task it has been programmed to do in the past.
I actually just started another company for Construction software, it is a web app of tools to help Contractors who do a lot of insurance related work. It is a mild form of Artificial Intelligence and it doesn't threaten mankind. It may end up threatening some profits to big Insurance Companies though.
