I've only bought this in the smaller tins. Looks like the 12oz tub is plastic... kinda the same thing that protein powder comes in. Is that correct? I'm going to assume that even if kept sealed, this isn't suitable for longer term (multi year) storage?

I think it probably is. Only smoked through it but even after opened it kept the tobacco as moist as the first time.

No offense, but that's a wrong assumption. I've been smoking EGR out of a twenty year old tub, and the tobacco is still fresh and moist. Never had an EGR or Mid-Town series tub that had failed. Same goes for Carter Hall and Prince Albert.

And there are a couple of tricks to keep it that way once you open it. There's a thin freshness seal under the removable lid. I carefully open it enough to get enough tobacco out to fill a tin of EGR. I keep the rim of the tub free of tobacco, and push the seal back as it was. Even if you don't keep that thin seal, the tobacco will stay fresh for quite a while.

^that is probably even over kill. I load from the tub into the pipe and the stuff is pretty darn close to how it came.

Does this go for any tubs? Like captain black, or even C&D's tin's with plastic lids? I've been jarring everything out of fear, and now I'm out of mason jars.

My experience with tubs like Captain Black, Sir Walter Raleigh, etc., have been problem free. C&D tins will last for a short while, and if you are slow in smoking those tins, I'd jar or mylar them.

Generally speaking I find that OTC blends are fine in their pouches for quite a while several months to a year in my experience.

I don't know if it is "best practice," but I have had several tubs that I have kept for more than a year or two that worked fine. I don't like to test the limits, but tobacco is much more durable and resilient that is usually assumed.

I think some people are preserving rare and expensive blends, and they may be correct in being dogmatic about canning jars with fresh gaskets, but a sound tub works for a long time.

That's how I do my tubs of Angler's Dream.
