Now that... I have absolutely no idea what that is. How does that work, is it a metal bowl inset into plastic? A calabash sort of deal?

It's made of Redmanol. A precursor to Bakelite. Redmanol was made from 1907-1922. It has a briar bowl insert.
MLC is a Linkman pipe. I scored this at an actual house estate sale. The antique stores around my area are mostly furniture stores.

Nice one! Bakelite cleanup is the easy part. Stem polish works excellent. Usually the rim on a pipe like that is dinged up. If it is, there's no way to fix that.

The downside for me on those pipes is that moisture collects in the bottom of the trap. If one isn't careful, it's easy to get a mouthful of tobacco juice. It does NOT taste good. It's less likely with a bent, but it still happens. The really great part on this find is the case. I've had a number of pipes like that without the case. For some reason the pipe and case are often separated.
