Dunhill Shape 743

I found the first oce but didn't find,
I can't say the old "743" shape corresponds to anything on Dunhill's modern chart, for the simple reason that I've never seen it before. I don't just mean I've never seen a modern version of it, I mean I haven't seen it all - this is, as far as I can find, the only "743" we've ever had. Rather looks like something Paolo Becker would have made, circa forty years later.

At the risk of jacking the thread, I have a sort of similar Bruyere but with a longer shank in the style of a Liverpool, pronounced fishtail stem and stamped '762'. My browsings on the web have turned up naught. It has a 1967 date with an '8' floating below and to the right of the '7' which, I believe, would make it manufactured in '67 and shipped in '68. Some pics below and apologies for the poor lighting and colour balance etc. Any thoughts?

PS: Stamped a group 4 but certainly on the smaller side of that variable scale.

This kind of gets to where I was going in my thoughts about 743. I think during the 1960's Dunhill was making some experimental shapes that were variations (in their shaping and propotions) to their more traditional catalog shapes. My example is this 1963 shape 536 (should never have sold it).

I'm not a Dunhill/White Spot guy (to say the least as everyone knows) but that pipe is a unique beauty, the 743 stamped pipe. The finish is superb, grain and stain, and the shaping is magnifique. If you can get your hands on that baby, I say go for it. Courtesy of your neighborhood enabler. Or keep the photo in a folder for the glory of the unattained.

Dunhill743 is a great shape, it’s one I really regret selling. Speaking of which I think I need a new dunhill lol

Wow. Went a few halibut fishing for a few days and this thread just got really interesting! Looking at the pics dmcmtk posted, the 743 does look somewhat different than their 143 shape. The forward cant looks much more pronounced. Could be variations in the same shape I suppose? So intrigued now...

Dunhill's cant angle was indeed bizarrely inconsistent. I have a number of 137s and 848s straight Dublins, and no two are tilted the same. Go figure.

My question is really about the height of the bowl as described in the 743 SP listing (Bowl Height: 2.06 in.) and the height of the "standard" or catalog 143 shape's bowl.
