I picked this up the other day from that auction place. It’s a Root Briar DR A2 and it has no date suffix after the D in England. I’ll try to upload some bad cel phone pics. Any idea on a possible date for this pipe? It’s been quite a while since I’ve posted here. Hope it works.

EDIT: Fixed Capitalization in Title - Bob

I think the stampings haven’t worn evenly. Could’ve just been that they weren’t stamped evenly. Any idea on an age for this pipe?

Pretty challenging without that code. Not sure this is helpful, other than 1949+....

"The DR letter grading was initiated in 1949. The ROOT BRIAR stamping under DUNHILL was introduced in the 1950s and the "R" on the DR pipes with this finish will be discontinued then."

I wonder if the shank had some work done? I've got a DRA2 from 1972. I'm away from my library so I can't look up what year the star grades started. ?

I was reading in the John C. Loring book about some of those stats you mention, trying to narrow it down but like you said, without that suffix ..

According to the Loring book it was 1979 when Dunhill went to the star system for the DR’s.

It’s a small pipe, probably a group 2 size.

I was thinking possibly 60’s or 70’s but there isn’t a number in the circle next to an R. As far as shank work, I can’t see where any work was done on it. It just looks like they didn’t stamp the year suffix. I looked through a loupe and can’t see where it was ever stamped.
